Extreme engineering on DSC just had a show on the levies being built. There are steel coffers going into the ground 70 to 80 feet anchoring the top of the levies. The old ones were anchored with coffers that were only 40 feet into the ground, so the new ones were built much, much stronger.

Yeah, that's great...now that the storm has shifted, the levees that WEREN'T improved on the other sides of the state are the ones that are going ot be hit.

WTG.

Did not know that, thought they all were rebuilt.

......and what is WTG?

Gustav hits the coast, with a projected water surge of 14 ft. One has to wonder if the levees will hold.

What were you doing in Souderton?

Looking for SunMo to give me a tour of Jamie Moyer's childhood home. The bastich never showed up.  >:(

I'm back in Houston. The flight was packed this morning with people trying to get ahead of the storm. I thought it would be clody or windy here...nothing. Blue skies and a smooth flight.

So I'm on the shuttle bus going to my truck after the flight and there's a guy on there throwing down some chinese food. A huge styrofoam container of it. We pull up to his car, dude leaves his trash and shtein all over the bus, walks off the bus and stands by his car leaving the 60-something year old guy to carry all his shtein off the bus.

What a farg bag.

Father Demon

You should have punched him, or at least thrown the food containers at him.

Hank Moody wouldn't have let that go.
The drawback to marital longevity is your wife always knows when you're really interested in her and when you're just trying to bury it.

PhillyPhreak54

I should have, but I was too tired. The rudeness of people amazes me sometimes.

Anyways...

Nagin was on CNN and said they arrested a looter. He's in cuffs waiting to go to Angola.

It seems like such an extreme position, but really it's just common sense.  It's an awful, awful location for human habitation.  We cannot defeat the ocean, it's just not possible.  To persist in rebuilding New Orleans is folly by definition.  Sure there's lots of history, and sure lots of people are affected, but neither of these concerns change the fact that the city is located in a place where only lizards fish and birds should live.

You make an arguable point, but refusing to rebuild a major american city is clearly not a feasible option. There are too many people, too much money and too much history involved to just try to reason its existence away. Besides, most of the Netherlands resides below sea level and Amsterdam is only even on the map because of an elaborate canal structure. Should people abandon the greatest city on Earth just because it shouldn't be there in the first place?

Also, I'm curious about something. In the couple hundred years leading up to Katrina, how many times was New Orleans completely destroyed by hurricanes or other weather issues? Has this happened before? It sort of lends (even yet still) more credence to global warming research...

In 1900 Galveston TX was almost wiped off the map entirely. Not just buildings and structures, the whole topography changed by a hurricane.

Hurricanes didn't happen before Al Gore released an Inconvenient Truth.
