We get the majority of our oil from Canada, blame Cerevant

I knew Canada was high on the list, but didn't know they were #1.

The top ten countries that the U.S. imports from:

1. Canada
2. Mexico
3. Saudi Arabia
4. Venezuela
5. Nigeria
6. Angola
7. Iraq
8. Algeria
9. United Kingdom
10. Brazil

and how much oil consumed by the U.S. comes from the U.S. itself, compared to the sources in that list?

This doesn't really answer your question per se, but it leads us in that direction:

Top World Oil Producers, Exporters, Consumers, and Importers, 2006

In this, the US was the 3rd leading producer of oil at 8.37 million barrels per day.

The U.S. was also the top oil consumer, at 20.59 million barrels.  The five European nations in the top 15 consumers (Russia, Germany, France, Britain and Italy) consume a total of approximately 11 million barrels per day.

The U.S. imports 12.22 million barrels per day.

Congress can't do shtein about the price of gas..at least not directly.  If they took steps to strengthen the dollar, rather than the opposite--Iraq war, stimulus package, require higher gas mileage from automakers, etc.--that would help.

It would be interesting to see the plan they "had" before the election. And if they did/do those things you mention it might help. I'm just tired of the idiot in the office and the idiots running, and in Congress. We have three canidates who will change nothing, I know Obama is running on the Change factor, but in reality what can he really change, except perception of our Country to the world for a short time. Then after the glitter is gone it will be more of the same.

I heard Nader on the Ed Shultz show today, and I know he sounds a little crazy, but seriously what do we have to turn to anymore, I need to read up on him a little more.

I know polls are not the most popular but here is a comparison of different polls over the last couple of years:

farg you - I'm paying $4.69 per gallon in a country with an oil surplus, and the CAD is currently worth more than the USD, but the USD is continuing to drag it down.
An ad hominem fallacy consists of asserting that someone's argument is wrong and/or he is wrong to argue at all purely because of something discreditable/not-authoritative about the person or those persons cited by him rather than addressing the soundness of the argument itself.

Changing habits will be tough.  I'm not sure what the breaking point is on gas prices, but I have to think we're getting close.

The real answer isn't changing habits, because that will be very difficult.  The answer isn't government intervention to force oil companies to lower prices or increase demand, as the lobbyists and politicians in the pockets of big oil won't allow that to happen.  And the answer isn't trying to convince our "friends" the Saudis to increase production and sell it to us cheaper.

The real answer is to get off our dependence on foreign oil.  Hydro, nuclear, solar, and wind can all produce enough energy to power this country without a drop of oil being used.  How do we get there?  That's where the government comes in - incentives through tax relief, consortiums, and even grants are necessary to get the big boys to develop these sources so wind turbines aren't an oddity when driving through the Midwest, creating solar panels as big as towns, and building new and efficient nuclear power plants.  Yes, even in our backyards.  Only through alternative energy sources can we get things back in order.  The trouble is, this is a long term answer with a long term solution, and we need to change the thought process on how projects of this size and scope are funded, completed, and brought to the public.

Totally agree with this. The tech is already there and just needs to be put into the market place. That's really the biggest issue. Making something affordable for the everyone. You could build houses that generate a good portion of their own power needs at this point.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.
