What a crazy mess. I still don't understand how it was cheaper to fly out of Austin back to Houston, to Louisville, back to Houston and then back to Austin. And they wonder why they lose money.

I hear ya. I was looking into flights from Harrisburg to L.A., and they were routing me through Philly. I then asked why I shouldn't just drive to Philly and pick up the same flights they were connecting me with. Of course, doing so would have cost me several hundred more dollars. The same flight, just without the connecting leg from Harrisburg, was more money. Strange.

If you saw a breakdown of your airfare, you would see where those costs come from. Most of it is location and airport dependent. Your bottom line "air travel" costs are no different, you are generally charged by the mile. But it costs more to fly out of philly because of the higher union costs for the workers. More employees in philly. Airport opperational expenses,  City taxes, etc...even the fuel costs are higher at some airports.

You're charged depending on where you arrive and depart, because essentially that is where your "fare" will be spent. Harrisburg is a smaller airport, with less taxes involved, less employees...etc... therefore it is cheaper to fly in and out of.

If you are not flying internationally, going smaller airports is the way to go (Harrisburg, Lehigh Valley, etc...), you can save hundreds. If you're ok with a connection.

i feel like it's the exact opposite.  i can usually fly to Vegas or LA or San Fran for less than 300 from any of the DC airports.  next week I have to fly into knoxville and my ticket is almost 900.  i've flown there several times and have never gotten a ticket less than 600.  from my experiences and flying for work a lot the last few years, the smaller airports are much more expensive because there are a lot less flights and you have less options, meaning they can charge more.

900 dollars from d.c. to knoxville?

holy farg.

Vegas is an anomaly since they have such high traffic, costs are lower.  I heard somewhere that the Casino's pay the airlines to keep prices lower to allow more gamblers to make it out there

vegas does everything for a reason, from the colors of the casino carpets to the airlines.  but yeah i've gotten tickets for less than 175 nonstop before.

nah it looks to be only like a 5 hour drive from dc.  flying really wouldn't save more than an hour or two tops.
