Eagles sign Jabar Gaffney to a one year deal.

Now that's a salient point, PG.

Although I still think Givens would have been a MUCH better option, I'll give Gaffney the benefit of the doubt even though UF receivers collectively suck ass as a rule.

Florida receivers = Penn State running backs.

Another genius move by the front office.

Again, basing this on WHAT? The fact that the offense in Houston was so well put together? Where could you possibly think he was a bust without seeing him on an actual TEAM. His first year in the NFL was the Texans FIRST SEASON in the NFL. We consistently made fun of that offensive line and the offense as a whole. Judging him on what he did there is hardly fair.

Here's the only thing I don't like about this move. They clearly counting on Brown to be their number one this year and that makes me nervous. What I see here is a situation where the team has three #2 WRs, two #4 WRs and Wilbur. Brown is probably better than Gaffney, but not by enough to make a huge difference. If the team adds a number 1 then this is a solid WR group from top to bottom. If not, it's just a mishmash of players, all of which are decent at something and none of which are good at everything.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?

Here is where I disagree. There are still other things that could happen and things they could have in the works. I won't start being nervous and freaking out until the season is ready to start and they say that Brown is the #1. There were no other WRs that were out there that were paid big bucks that would be any more of a #1. Yes, you can say Givens all you want, but all he has over Brown is experience....and Brown might have more experience at #1 than Givens has.

True, but three # 2 WR's (if Pinkston is a 2) is better than the one #2 WR, and four #4 WR's we had.

I believe that Gaffney can be a 70 catch 800 yard WR in this offense.

That would be welcomed.

If Reggie turns out like I think he will (the next Chad Johnson) then we might just be alright.

What this does tell you, for those of you who like to read between the lines, is that they are not sold on Pinky recovering from the achilles and they are clearly planning for that in case he doesn't. And what Ed was told about my boy Wilbur seems to be true as well -- he's out of chances. Which I thought he was alright last year.

Maybe Darnerian can push Greg out the door too.

While I appreciate the coherent response, PG. If the team goes into the season with Brown as the number one, you will be the first one on this board to say that you trust the team's judgement and that Brown is going to be a stud.

While I hope that he blossoms this year, I think he is more likely to be a stud two years from now after learning from and playing with a true number one. This move improves the depth at WR and could work out nicely IF a)they sign someone to be the top receiver or b)Brown matures into a star ahead of schedule. I'm not holding my breath for either of those situations.

All Givens has over Brown is experience?  I think he has a little more than that, PG.

I think Reggie is going to be an excellent professional receiver but adding a guy like Givens would have been a better choice, IMO.  Not only does he have better stats than Gaffney, he also has a wealth of experience playing in big games including multiple Super Bowls.

Argue all you want about Brown versus Givens because I think Reggie has tremendous potential.  Arguing Givens versus Gaffney is silly, though.

Phreak, I love you man, but this is the most homerific thing I've ever read. Ever. Think about that. I mean that's impressive.

You clearly missed the point.

And Phreak, I said the exact same thing about what this means between the lines earlier in the thread.  :yay

The Pats won 3 Superbowls without a true #1.  I personally like our WRs as they stand right now and it could go either way.  The thing that I do like is that our WRs are young, which is a benefit but also has drawbacks.   Gaffney/Brown could be a very good pair.  I personally would love to see the Eagles make a deal for Walker and our WR corp would look VERY solid.  Without Walker, the WR corp could still be very productive since I see the Eagles going back to running the ball and spreading it around more this year.

the problem is, we have extremes to compare against, in 2002 and 2003, the Eagles had an abismal crop of wide recievers, then, in 2004, they sign one of the best in the game and he immediately legitimizes their recievers.

so, they've had the worst and had one stud with some dudes, but they've never had just a group of 3-4 capable good recievers that Donovan can get the ball to.

i think if they can accomplish that, and Gaffney certainly won't hurt, the offense will be very productive through the air*
