Can we get a screenplay out of that material?

Just rewatch Falling Down.

The man. The myth. The legend.

Are they sure it wasn't between 10:37 and 10:59.

So I'll probably be out of a job in about 3 weeks.  Long story short (it'll probably end up being long).... I just got royally farged by my project manager.  I was promoted to Operations Manager back in July but haven't gotten a lot of training on certain things that I didn't even know I was supposed to be trained on....mostly financial stuff.  She's never in the office and is terrible about responding to emails or returning phone calls.  Just over a month ago she gave me a "process improvement plan" which highlighted a few areas that I needed to perform better in.  I didn't think it was a huge deal because we did that crap all the time in the military and there weren't any negative attachments to it unless performance in those areas didn't improve.  And the things that she wanted me to improve on were fairly minor things, all of which I've gotten better at and been complimented on.  Seemed like a job coaching tool.  Well, she's moving on to another operation and we're getting a new project manager (the guy who replaced me at night).  This dude has a bunch of exp and knowledge and I've learned more from him over the last couple of months than I've learned from my previous project manager in the 15 or so months I've been with this company.

So our regional director shows up yesterday and we went out to lunch.  He tells me that the improvement plan that was written up on me is basically a death sentence and is the final step before termination.  I was farging floored.  He made me an offer to go back on the night shift with the same pay and benefits I got with the promotion and that he would throw the improvement plan in the trash and wipe the slate clean.  If I don't, he says that I may or may not be fired at the end of that review period, which is 3 weeks from now.

I'm at a farging loss for words here.  We give our drivers a verbal, followed up by 2 written warnings before HR even lets us think about termination.  Not to mention that I didn't even know that I was doing a bad job and I definitely didn't know that this improvement plan I was given was basically a final termination warning.  It was presented to me very casually and she made no indication that this was a pretty big farging deal.   Had I known that, I most definitely would have refused to sign or contacted HR immediately.

I was half tempted to tell them to farg off and walk out, but that's just an all around lose/lose situation for me.  I'm super ignorant when it comes to civilian employment and employee rights and all that.  This is basically the 1st civilian job I've ever had.  I'm supposed to talk with the director again tomorrow morning.  Should I call HR first and find out if all of this is actually legit?  Should I contact a lawyer?  Tell them to farg off?  Go back to the night shift?  Or stay in my current position and make them decide if they want to fire me or not?

Thoughts?

Rome

Take the night shift and look for something else on their dime.  farging disgusting, though.  Sorry, Sassy.

Wow...damn man, sorry for all that bullshtein. Because that is what it is - bullshtein. How big is your company?

The first part of your post where you mention that you haven't received training on certain things because you didn't know? Well you're not a mind reader so you cannot know about them if someone doesn't tell you. I would hold onto that as part of your defense.

I would also hammer home that the lady was pretty much a ghost.

Each company is different but this one sounds way more corporate and buttoned up than I am used to. If I were you I would wait it out...but keep a shteinload of notes detailing what is said and or done to you. If you have an employee handbook or rules that you were given and made to sign when hired find that and read if it says anything about the process improvement plans and if they're a precursor to being terminated.

if it doesn't mention it then you have something to stand on - especially since they said they'd throw it away if you just went back to your old spot. That doesn't sound like you're a bad employee because if you were they'd fire you and not offer you another option.

If they do let you go and you feel that it is without merit or cause (is PA an at will state? I don't remember) I would chat with an attorney. To my eyes it seems like the disciplinary structure is not uniform (the drivers are on a different demerit platform) and the whole "this is the death knell but if you want your old spot back you can go and I will throw this away" is weird.

Talk to the director and highlight what you have done and be open about what concerns you have with this process. Especially since your immediate supervisor never made mention of this being some sort of "fix it or else, pal" thing.

This situation reeks of corporate shtein and I hate that. Good luck man.

Yeah, it's definitely a big corporate joint (one of the larger logistics/distribution companies in the country), but our account is a small/medium sized account and our daily work environment doesn't have a corporate feel to it at all.  It's a pretty relaxed place to work and I've enjoyed learning all this new shtein.  I also know this isn't an industry (or company) I want to work in forever, but I've been fairly content with the job until now.

I guess I'll start with a call to HR in a few min when they open up and go from there.  Worst comes to worst, I'll probably take the night position and immediately start job hunting.  Unless pride gets in the way.  Given the way I've been treated over the last 48 hours, I still have to wonder if I even want to keep working here.  Who's to say that I'll be treated better than I am now?  If I accept their terms, I may just come off looking like a push over.  I've got my dignity, you know?

why cant your regional director override the stupid bitch who is trying to fire you...he seems like he likes you and he out ranks her

good point by igy - why would he take her word on it?

If you do go back to night shift then I'd agree with what you and Rome said - start hunting for something else. To be blindsided like that is bullshtein.

phillycrew

We have improvement plans too and they are not necessarily a death sentence but they are required before you are fired.  You will probably not be promoted again.  It is nothing like the military.  Don't let the pride put you in a bad situation.  The suggestion to stick it out while looking for another job is a good one.

I have never heard of throwing a performance plan in the trash.  It sounds like he wants somebody in your job and is leveraging the plan to move you back to night shift, albeit at the same pay and benefits.  Question is whether you think you can find employment somewhere else that you like quickly.  If you can't, I would consider going back to night shift.  That leaves the daytime to interview elsewhere.

BTW, the whole may or may not fire you in three weeks is bullshtein.  What is going to change in three weeks?  It is either a threat to make you move or he is giving you a heads-up that the firing is going to occur.

PhillyPhreak54

Yep solid post PC...definitely sounds like they're angling to get someone else in there.

Go back to nights and find a new gig and then tell em to farg off

Sgt PSN

Got some more info. They aren't putting anyone else in my day time position. We currently have 5 people in the office. The project manager,  me, 2 daytime coordinators,  and 1 overnight. The plan is to eliminate 1 position  because 5 is kind of overkill....which I actually agree with. Also, PA is a right to work state, so you can be fired at any time for any reason with or without documentation. The reason our drivers have a longer leash is because there is a nationwide shortage of drivers. So if we're going to fire a driver, we have to prove to hr that the driver is truly worth firing.

Eventually the plan is to move the operations manager position to something like a noon-9 pm shift, since that is when we have most of our drivers on the road. The guy who is going to take over as the new pm also says he wants to address me getting a pay raise in 3 months because I'm also going to have new responsibilities thrown on me.

I'm still not thrilled about this at all but I'll give it a shot. I like the new project manager and I like the director. The noon-9 shift isn't great but it's def better than overnight. I'll give them the 3 months to make this all work. If not, I'm out.
