QuoteRod Hood is a restricted free agent, and the Eagles are concerned enough that they might lose him to another team that they plan on making him the top-level tender, which would guarantee the team a first-round draft choice and a third-round pick should another team end up with the Eagles' No. 3 cornerback

I love this move. Why? Because Rod Hood is needed on this team if they want to win. In the current NFL with the rules leaning towards offenses and teams throwing more than ever you must have 3 above average cornerbacks. If you don't you'll be eaten up.

I don't want Hood traded and I didn't want them to risk losing him by placing a lower tender on him. He'll likely leave in UFA next year though. But we have him for one more year. He's one of the guys who I think they tried to lock up this year but him and his agent were smart. They know Hood can start and they know teams overpay for good CBs. So when he gets to FA next year he'll have a few teams knocking at his door. Unless the Eagles somehow convince him to re-sign this year longterm.

For the sake of discussion, here are Hood's defensive stats:

QuoteYr Team G Ttl Tckl Ast Sacks Int Yds Avg Lg TD Pass Def
2003 PHI 14 19 18.0 1 0 1 5 5.0 5 0 2
2004 PHI 16 39 35.0 4 0 1 20 20.0 20 0 6
2005 PHI 16 42 40.0 2 0 3 17 5.7 17 0 12
TOTAL    46 100 93.0 7 0 5 42 8.4 20 0 20

And his return stats:
QuoteYr Team G No Yards Avg Lg TD 40+
2003 PHI 14 0 0 --- 0 0 0
2004 PHI 16 15 336 22.4 45 0 1
2005 PHI 16 38 900 23.7 53 0 1
TOTAL    46 53 1236 23.3 53 0 2

I like the move too.  I don't think there's any team out there willing to part with 2 first day draft picks so that pretty much guarantees Hood being here this year.  And if by chance, there is a team willing to do so, then I would certainly welcome the additional draft picks.

And like Phreak said, this gives the Eagles an extra year to work out something long term with Hood.  And if Lito starts off the year playing like he did last year, then I wouldn't be surprised to see Reid and JJ put Hood into the starting lineup.

Rome

Stupid move.  They should just release him and let another NFC East rival pick him up for nothing.

i dont know about all of that...but a solid 3rd corner is a very nice luxury to have...however if the eagles need rod hood to win they are in more trouble than any of us even think

The only way they would have lost him would be if they put the LOWEST tender on him, because he was a UDFA coming out of college. If they put the middle tender on him, teams would have had to pony up a 1st round pick. Sure, you can negotiate compensation, but I think it would have been a 1st or the Eagles would have matched.

He played better than Lee-Toe last year.  If it came down to a choice between Hood and Sheppard, I take Hood and I don't look back.

Brown, on the other hand...  no.

I think it's a pretty smart move... and I like Hood and all, but for a 1st and a 3rd... I'd pack his farging bags for him.

Hood might be the best nickel corner in football. He really impressed me last year. He's better than Lito as a cover corner.

Rod outplayed Lito last season.  That's not even in dispute, IGY.

Of course, if you'd rather argue for argument's sake, that's fine.  I enjoy your white-bread impersonation of Stokely Carmichael as much as the next guy.
