While this story is pretty funny I don't really see where there's much of a story past that. So what if the 'white house' didn't say anything right away. So what if he didn't have a quail stamp. If the guy who was shot wants to press charges he will I'm sure.

The Vice President shoots a man in the face with a shotgun and they withold the info from the people at whose pleasure they allegedly serve?  That's a little strange.  The local authorities were prevented from talking to Cheney by the Secret Service about the episode?  That's a little strange too.
The White House owes the American people prompt news regarding it's leaders.   The Vice President of the United States shot a man in the face with a shotgun.  I think that rates with "be first to press" if you can possible do it, especially if you are the goddamned White House.
And who the hell do the Secret Service think they are preventing the local authorities from conducting routine interviews following hunting accidents?  If they had nothing to hide, then why shield Cheney from the authorities?  I don't see any evidence to think the Secret Service perpetrated any kind of cover-up by disallowing the authorities to speak to Cheney, but I think it's awful that he gets the good ol' boy pass.  Is he above the law, above procedure?  Who else is?  How do the rest of us Americans get into that club?

The stamp is just a footnote..it carries no penalty.  It's not like Schwarzenegger failing to have a motorcycle endorsement on his CA driver's licence; even non-royalty wouldn't have been fined for lacking the stamp.

Again, not my point.

In the way of a heads up... if any of you 'accidentally' shoot me in the face with birdshot, I will first try to repay the favor, and if unsuccessful will then press charges. Just FYI.

Didn't the rancher go to the press? If so then why do  care if the WHite house notify's me? In fact the less spin the better. It's not like they thought it wouldn't get out if they didn't say anything, though they could be that stupid.
This administration serves at the pleasure of no one who demands an explanation anyway. They just drink the cool aid...

I still can't stop laughing about this.  Dick Cheney shot a guy in the face with a shotgun.  Nice gun he was using, too.  Ha!

On the conspiracy tip, wouldn't it be hilarious if it turns out Cheney was drunk?  Afterall, he was arrested twice for driving drunk.  It would be reasonable to wonder as much about anyone else with such a record.

CBS reported, but has since taken down the tidbit that local cops weren't allowed to speak to Dick "Go farg Yourself" Cheney at all.  The Secret Service prevented it.

According to the AP, arrangements had been made to do the interview on the following morning, and the deputy went earlier in a "miscommunication."

Excerpt:
QuoteSecret Service spokesman Eric Zahren said that about an hour after Cheney shot Whittington, the head of the Secret Service's local office called the Kenedy County sheriff to report the accident. "They made arrangements at the sheriff's request to have deputies come out and interview the vice president the following morning at 8 a.m. and that indeed did happen," Zahren said.

At least one deputy showed up at the ranch's front gate later in the evening and asked to speak to Cheney but was turned away by the Secret Service, Zahren said. There was some miscommunication that arrangements had already been made to interview the vice president, he said.

Take it for what it's worth.  This story gets stranger by the moment.

The Smoking Gun checks in on the matter.

:-D

Am I the only one who sees the humor and irony in this?

Diomedes

No, you're just the only one dim enough to be genuinely amused by it.  They report on shooters all the time.  The Smoking Gun.  Ha.  We laughed years ago.

Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me.  I only read the site whenever someone posts a link to a particular story so I have no idea what else they report on.
