GIBBS HEADING BACK TO NASCAR AFTER 2007?

The talk in NASCAR circles (hey, we got sources everywhere) is that Joe Gibbs will retire (again) from coaching after the 2007 season and return to the NASCAR team that he owns.

And this news will only fuel speculation that taterskins owner Dan Snyder will target Steelers coach Bill Cowher to be his successor, notwithstanding the assumption that current Washington defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is in line for the job.

Cowher is under contract through 2007, and with the Steelers opening camp on Friday the chances of an extension coming any time before the end of the 2006 season will be slim and/or none.

At that point, Cowher might just finish out his contract and see what he can get on the open market.  Our guess?  The taterskins would pay Cowher at least two dollars for every one that the Steelers would pay.

I'd say Snyder would triple what the Stillers would offer. He's not cheap.

I think there's no way the Steelers don't re-up Cowher.  He's made plenty of money is his career and his family loves the Pittsburgh area.  They'll make him one of the higher-paid coaches in the game, and that'll be good enough.

The skins should honestly give Gregggg Williams another shot as a head coach, based on what he's done with mostly bums on that defense.

Some of the ES camp reports...

It was especially enjoyable to watch and listen as several media members threw in their two cents on Soriano. I'm not kidding when I say that some media members even stayed in the media room while all of us headed down to the field because they wanted to wait until the trading deadline had passed to see if/when Soriano was traded. And yet, I have a sneaking suspicion that this is how Joe Gibbs would want it.

Yeah, Joe cares about that.

One of the taterskins staffers told me the first fan showed up today at 10 a.m. He said this guy took a cab all the way down from New York to be at training camp, and once he was dropped off he just hung out at the front gate until they let him in. It needs to be said - our fans are like no other.

What? Stupid like no other? Never heard of an airplane? How about Greyhound or even Amtrak? The Northeast corridor doesn't have many daily flights and trains that run from NY to Washington. Nah, no one ever travels that route! Let's take a cab and shell out hundreds of dollars. Dope.

I got my stuff together, got my credentials and headed into the building. Having anticipated the miserable weather, I had been drinking bottles of water all day, so I needed to make a quick pitstop as soon as I got in the building. As I headed out of the restroom I nearly took Marcus Washington out when I almost opened the door on him. How many fans would have been hunting for me had I taken out the heart and soul of our defense because of my girly bladder?

Safety Adam Archuleta couldn't resist. WR Santana Moss fully extended in hopes of pulling in a poorly thrown pass on the far sideline. Archuleta could have pulled off, but instead he let Moss know he was there with a little love tap, and knocked him on his tail. Let's just say if that play happens again during the regular season you can rest assured that Archuleta will knock the wide receiver out.

No, we can watch Archuleta get smoked while in coverage.

Brunell performed the Bang drill where he couldn't seem to hit the broad side of a barn. His throws were either too powerful where he overthrew guys going to the corner of the end zone (from a good distance out) or his balls fell short of the intended target. I did notice that not all of these were his fault as in some situations; the receivers went in different directions than where Brunell threw the ball. This could be either the WR's or the QB's error. Under the new offense, you have the 3, 5 or 7 step drop and then you get rid of the ball or take off running. If you throw the ball, many times it is on a timing route where the ball is expected to be in a certain location, and hopefully, the WR will be there at the same time.

3, 5 & 7 step drops are fundamental football. This guy makes it sound like Al Saunders invented them. And get this...if no one is open after the drop is complete the QB has to check down or run! Imagine that. Some ground breaking offensive football being developed down there in Washington.

Amtrak only does that route once per day, and it's in the afternoon. It goes north first thing in the morning.
