the tourney always has at least 2 or 3 really great upset games in the first 3 rounds, which is what makes it so much fun to watch.

not really...but thats why its overrated because so many people seem to believe this

once in a blue moon youll have a GW or a richmond over syracuse but its a lot less rare than people realize

another huge misnomer is the amount of buzzer beaters....most people think there are a lot but in reality its just that the ones that do happen get replayed into the ground so people get fooled into thinking each tournament has a bunch of them

of course there are a couple great games each tournament but they are far outweighed by non descript boring or just plain bad games

no, actually the tourney does have a few upsets in each round.  it's rarely a huge, epic upset where the 1, 2 or 3 seeds get knocked out in the first round, but 7-10, 6-11, 5-12 games are almost always fun to watch and the favorite probably wins those games about 60% of the time (give or take).

last year alone, 12 beat 5 in 3 out of 4 and only 1 game was decided by more than 5 points.

6 beat 11 in 3 out of 4 games but 2 of those games were decided by 1 point.  the other 2 were by 8 (11 seed upset) and 9 points.

7 beat 10 in 2 out of 4 games.  2 games where blow out-ish and the other 2 were relatively close.

so last year, it was actually a split right down the middle with the higher seed winning 6 and the lower seed also winning six.  so my guestimate of 60% is really only about 1 game off....at least in 2009.  i'd say that if you look at a larger body of work....say over 10 or 20 years, that it's probably pretty close though.

so basically, out of 12 total games, only 2 probably weren't worth watching unless you follow a particular school playing in those games.

the buzzer beater thing i agree with as it does happen less than people tend to think.  although i don't think that a game needs to end on a buzzer beater in order to be a great game.  as i said, the 1-16 game or 2-15 are usually sleeper games and maybe once every few years you get a close game or potential upset, but those are far, few and in between.

that's why i like watching the "middle of the pack" games.  pretty much anything from 4-12 is going to at least be an entertaining game that comes down to the final 2 or 3 minutes.  and that's what makes it exciting for me.

of course lower seeds win games...but you said "really great" upsets...i took that to mean big upsets...and those are few and far btwn

march madness has more upsets than any other sport ever, but you're right, it would be better if it had even more than the most

this is a good laugh out loud post.  it probably shouldn't be, but it is.

the problem is to many fans think a real upset is a higher seed beating a lower said which is not always the case...in fact lower seeds are sometimes favored...pools which i admittedly love and partake in have corrupted people into what a true upset is

you have to look at the teams not the seeds

for example there was only one double digit underdog to win outright in the tourney last year and that was dayton over west virginia which doesnt exactly scream cinderella

percapita the are way more real upsets in the cbb regular season but because there are not seeds attached to the teams and because the media and dumb fans dont pump them up you never hear about them

i'm pretty sure no one actually thinks that.

i also know what you meant by it though.....

and i also know what you're talking about with true upsets.   is 10 beating 7 a true upset?  probably not since those teams are probably very similar and when you get that low in the rankings, it's basically a coin flip as to who gets the higher seed.

but, on paper it's an upset if 10 wins, although that's not what really interests me.  it's mostly just the fact that the teams seeded in the middle often match up very well against each other which usually translates into some great games that aren't decided until the final 2 minutes.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Great game today, Terps vs Georgia Tech with Md. pulling out a win on a last second buzzer beater.
