San Fran Ban

Quote
In a few short weeks, on election day, the voters of San Francisco will vote on Proposition H, which would prohibit the possession of handguns by city residents unless that resident is active duty military, or requires that possession for his/her job such as a policeman or security guard.

The proposition's sponsor, Supervisor Chris Daly, states that The New England Journal of Medicine found that a handgun in the home makes it 43 times more likely that someone other than an intruder will be killed.  He states that suicide mortality increases five-fold with a handgun.  He notes that by December of 2004, 56 of 87 San Francisco homicides that year involved handguns.  Mr. Daly believes that without handguns the city will also see reductions in suicides, domestic disturbances and workplace violence.

The opposition, The Coalition Against Prohibition, notes in its rebuttal that Washington DC has a murder rate 60% higher than they did in 1976 when they banned handguns.  Likewise, Chicago's 2003 murder rate is 38% higher than in 1982 when its ban went into affect.  Further, gun crimes in England and Wales doubled between 1998 and 2003 after handguns were banned in 1997.  The opposition calls on its own medical study, this one by the CDC in 2002, that found no evidence that gun control reduces crime.

2nd amendment no more...it's okay to be gay and get married in San Fran but you can't have a gun.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Who said anything about a city without handguns? Seems to me that passing this proposition would only create a city without legal handguns.

Idiotic proposition.

I can't say I'm surprised, though.  San Francisco is full of fruitcakes and I'm not talking about the homosexuals either.
