todays obvious observation: the defense sucks
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

ice grillin you

The Panthers' Jeff Rimer is one of the worst announcers I have ever heard.  He and Potvin seem to have a special hatred for the Flyers.  Potvin, I can understand.  Rimer's just a putz.

thats cause he used to be the caps announcer when they were in the patrick division...his unabashed hated of the flyers started way back then...him and steve levy are the two biggest flyer haters around...rimer is a POS

as for the flyers they are being exposed for their lack of speed......and their goalies are hideous...i dont blame the defense nearly as much as the forwards...they are so slow is ridiculous and cannot keep up with most teams in the nhl

this team is just not built for the new league...they dont have a single european forward under 25 on the whole team...and the only euros f's they do have are a plodding handzus a mucker in radivojevic and the ancient kapanan...they have four or five guys that just cant play in this league right now...and this doesnt even include that sloth turner stevenson whos injured...where is the speed and skill on this team?

on a positive note piktanen looks great so far...he will win a norris trophy in the next five years imo

WAH WAH WAH

Go away, you sicken me.

he's got a point, i'm not saying they won't win anything but have you seen the way teams with real speed have played them?  Montreal and Carolina both skated around them.  that's a real concern.

i think the defence and penalty kill will tighten up as the players become more familiar with each other and as the season progresses, but this team has a serious lack of speed.
I'm the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood.

Gagne has serious speed.  Did anyone else notice him race out and nearly beat two defensemen last night at the start of a power play in the 3rd period?

Holy Jesus...

yeah, but did you see Hitch screaming at him because his slapshot missed the net and led to a goal  :-D

individual players have speed, like Gagne and Kappanen (when he comes back) but their defence is slow.  Rathje got owned a few time last night

im obviously going on the assumption that this is the new nhl...if it isnt and three months from now a lot of things change then ill amend my "observations"...one thing i definitely underestimated was the absolute banishment of contact in front of the net...it makes players like hatcher and rathje almost meaningless

Gagne has serious speed

yeah gagne is unbelievably fast...im not saying they have no speed...every team obviously does...but the flyers have less of it than most...

even players like richards and carter (who i like a lot especially richards whos gonna be a captain in this league for a long time and reminds me a lot of ron francis) dont have great speed or skill....they are classic north american players...great leaders very smart hardworking  players but the flyers need to start drafting a lot more burners and skill ridden guys...even if they cant find moose jaw on a map are the hardest hitters or know how to back check

I just haven't seen the dedication to defense and hitting that are hallmarks of Hitchcock teams yet.  That's what concerns me most.

Last night certainly could have been an aberration but surrendering 7 goals plus a cheapie is disturbing whatever the circumstance.

That was my thought as well.  The defense has, well, sucked.  Not much else to say about it.

And, PG, it is 9 games into the season.  Over ten percent of the season is over.  Ten games where the Flyers have been quite inconsistent, and have had a lot of failures in the defensive end.  I don't care if it is October or May, giving up five goals in the third period is not good.

Is it time to panic?  No.  But there is concern.  A team 3.73 GAA is not going to get the Flyers very far in the postseason.

Blame the new NHL.  Every little hard hit or tie-up is getting called for a penalty.  It's ridiculous with each team getting 7-10 power plays a game now.  Last night's game made me sick....

You just don't get it, do you Geo?  It's early in the season and there is still plenty of time to right the ship.  It's not like winning a game or two this early in the season is going to make a difference in the long run.  Just ask the Phillies.  :P

I was thinking of that when I was writing the first post.  The Phils went 10-14 in April.  Move that to 12-12 and they're in the playoffs.  Of course, beat Houston ONE FREAKING TIME and they're in the playoffs as well.

Ah well, the Flyers are dabbling in mediocrity right now.  Hopefully they'll figure themselves out defensively... SOON!  :boom

ice grillin you

great win

normally this could catapult a team to a long win streak but in the nhl these days momentum is how good your pp is the next night much like a starting pitcher in baseball

but damn beating ottawa on the road takes away the pain of the eagles loss

NOT!!!
