August 2, 2005

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Only five days after being shot in the abdomen during a robbery attempt in Miami, defensive end Jerome McDougle was released from the hospital.

McDougle left Jackson Memorial Hospital at about 5:30 p.m. (ET) on Tuesday. It is still unknown when McDougle will meet with the team. The Eagles are happy that McDougle has been released.

"We are happy that Jerome has been released from the hospital today and has taken another step on his road to recovery," the team said in a statement. "Our doctors have been in continual contact with the doctors in Miami.

"Jerome has been very thankful and grateful for all the prayers and concerns his friends, teammates, and fans have displayed over the last few days."

Dr. David Shatz, M.D., the trauma surgeon who was attending when McDougle was first admitted to the hospital last Thursday night said that his prognosis is "good."

"He will recover fully and be able to go back to training in about six weeks," Shatz said.

McDougle needed emergency surgery and was in critical condition when he first arrived at the hospital.

Linebacker Keith Adams said Monday that he had spoken with Jerome's wife and wanted to let his family know the team's wishes and prayers are with them.

"They are holding up as best as they can," Adams said.

QuoteArrested were Birmmengham Guirand, 19, Lance Grant, 17, and Leonard Jenkins, 15. All were charged with robbery and attempted felony murder, police said. Another suspect, Charles Edward James, 17, was still at large, police said. All were from Miami.

Police said McDougle was shot after the robbers, with their faces covered, demanded that he hand over his property. One of them then shot him in the stomach, and he was robbed of a $20,000 watch that has not been recovered.

QuoteFourth suspect arrested in McDougle shooting

Daily News Staff and Wire Reports

Miami-Dade police have nabbed the fourth teen wanted for last week's shooting of Eagles defensive end Jerome McDougle.

Charles Edward James, 17, has been arrested and is in police custody, according to a statement from police yesterday. He is charged with robbery and attempted felony murder. The other three teens involved already had been arrested. They are Leonard Jenkins, 15, Lance Grant, 17, and Birmmengham Guirand, 19. They also were charged with robbery and attempted felony murder.

Police released no details about how James was located. And information about court dates for the suspects was not available.

McDougle, who was released from a Miami hospital on Tuesday, was shot in the stomach late Thursday night in South Miami Heights. According to police, four teens surrounded his car, took his $20,000 watch and then panicked and shot at the car several times.

Police said they believe they have apprehended all suspects involved in the incident.

Yesterday, Eagles coach Andy Reid was asked whether the news that McDougle was released from the hospital affects his thinking about bringing in another defensive end.

On Tuesday, Dr. David V. Shatz, the trauma surgeon who was attending when McDougle was first admitted to the hospital, said McDougle would be able to resume training in 6 weeks.

"We want him back, want to get him back in there and we want to do it the right way,'' Reid said. "We are counting on him being back in if that is what you're asking. He worked his tail off this offseason to get himself in great shape. He is not going to fall out of shape that fast. It's great that he was able to get back on his feet as fast as he could. That will be a help to the whole situation, but right now we are expecting him back in there and being a part of it."

Reid had said earlier the Eagles wanted to bring McDougle to Lehigh to rehab when he was ready to travel. Reid said yesterday that wasn't imminent.

"We have not set a date on that," he said.

Since they're minors, I wonder how they can release the names?

I'm no Legal EAGLE but is it perhaps because they're being tried as adults??

It's not a matter of deserve, though.  That determination has to be made in court, and they haven't made it that far yet.

QuoteMcDOUGLE TO RETURN THIS WEEK

Reid gave the good news that defensive end Jerome McDougle will return to Philadelphia in the next few days to begin his rehab program. McDougle was shot in the abdomen July 28 during a robbery attempt in Miami only days before the start of training camp. While he is able to walk, he has not been able to do any conditioning exercises.

McDougle's arrival is only being delayed due to the hurricane in the southern part of the U.S. Reid said that it will take him a few weeks to get back into shape. As for whether McDougle will play this season, Reid said that McDougle is "determined" to get come back and is confident that he will be fine even if it might take until the fifth or sixth game for him to make his season debut.

Excellent.  I'm guessing they are targeting the first game after the bye week (which is week 6).  Assuming McDougle starts the season on the PUP list, that will be the first game he's eligible to play.  So, he'll hopefully only miss 5 games.  It's nice that Kalu's looking solid, and Juqua Thomas has provided a spark in the mean-time.
