i have about a 50-50 shot right now of getting into this exchange program through my job, which would mean spending a year in hong kong.  i'm still in the running so it's a good sign. so i've been kind of doing some early research on the place since i've never been there. i come to realize that it's only a $20 ferry ride to macau, which is basically even bigger than vegas when it comes to casinos and gambling. now i'm thinking of moving there even if i don't make it into the program.

anyone here been to either?

That would be awesome. Go there for a week and scout it out.

I'm probably going to Vegas for SB weekend...got an offer from the Venetian. I've never stayed there, just gambled. Have you stayed there?

Been to both HK and Macau. Macau is definitely the Chinese Vegas, but realize that means mostly crazy Chinese games instead of the blackjack and craps you are used to. The big American corporate casinos are just starting to move in. There's a hint of danger there, kinda like how I imagine old Vegas was. Hookers are everywhere, the mafia (triads) are everywhere. There's a geographic split between the old real Macau and the megaresort area. I spent only limited time around the megaresorts, so my perspective could be skewed there.

HK is a first-world international city. One of the greatest places I've ever been. It's like living five years in the future. Just wandering around the city, you're constantly finding something amazing. Macau is second-world, poorer, more Chinese, more continental European. Less English.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

i dated a chinese-filipino girl for 5 years so i actually really like the asian games...i've lost at least a grand to her grandmother in mah jong. and i do pai gow a lot, good game to chill and drink for free and stay level.

and qb yeah everyone i've talked to has said the same thing about hong kong. the lady that ran our chicago office now runs the HK office and she's been telling me i'm probably good with going over regardless of the program. only problem is if i go on my own they won't pay for relocation.

phreak yeah i've stayed at palazzo like a dozen times, the regular rooms are 4 times the size of most other vegas rooms...like two levels. i haven't got a free room there in like a year or so, not sure why, but i used to get comped there all the time. super nice hotel.

Went to Hong Kong in 2000 when I was in the Navy. Incredible city.

FF where are you staying?  I was there two weeks ago for a meeting at the Aria.  That whole City Center is amazing.  Some great restaurants but my god was it expensive.  I had not been to Las Vegas in a few years and was shocked how expensive it is now.  Everything was on the company dime so no damage to the wallet.
