off the dome deer hunter is my favorite

of course apocalypse now

it might be full metal jacket if the second half was even half as good as the first half

I've got love for FMJ for obvious reasons, but I think people beat the 2nd half of the movie up a little too much.  The boot camp half of the movie is obviously great because there's a lot of humor to it and if you've been through Parris Island, there's a ridiculous amount of truth and accuracy.  The 'Nam portion of it though is pretty well done, it's just that it seems as though you've just watched 2 completely different movies that I think leaves people with a bad taste in their mouths after it's over.

2 movies that I love and I think are vastly underrated or under appreciated are Good Morning Vietnam and Born on the 4th of July.

GMV shows Vietnam from the perspective that most people ever even think about....which is the non-combatant side of being in a combat theater.  Shows how something seemingly unimportant like a humorous disk jockey can lift the spirits of the grunts in the field who are living under the constant threat of death.  Also gives a pretty good depiction of how abusive senior leaders in the military can be with their power, how idiotic and full of themselves young Lieutenants are, and how in over its head the US was over there.

Born on the 4th of July isn't so much about the war in Vietnam itself (though part of it does take place in country), but the war that the vets had to keep fighting after they got home.  The public backlash they dealt with for being participants in the war, the lack of care in VA hospitals and treatment centers, and the general feeling of betrayal by a country/gov't that he grew up loving and lost his ability to walk for.

haha.  It's probably the one movie he's ever made where you forget that you're watching Tom Cruise and you actually think you're watching the character he's portraying.

I'm a Robin Williams fan, so I enjoyed it even though he wasn't even close to accurately portraying the real Adrian Cronauer and that the movie itself was about as made up as you can get.  Cronauer was a DJ for the Air Force in Vietnam and he was a little outside the box in terms of his broadcasting, but that's pretty much where the similarities end. The movie was Robin Williams being Robin Wiliams.  But looking a little deeper into what the movie shows (which was probably not intended at all) I thought it painted a pretty cool picture of something that people just don't think about when it comes to the military, especially when in combat.  Whenever I told people I was a Marine, they just assumed that I ran around shooting shtein and blowing stuff up all day....which I did for a few years in the beginning of my career, but I spent very little time doing that for the last 13 years I was in.  So I thought it was cool that the movie showed the non-combat arms side of the military and the impact that it has.

Probably not, but I think it's highly underrated.  In fact, when most people think about movies about Vietnam, I'd say very few would ever think of this movie off the top of their heads because it's focus isn't on the war itself, but the hell that so many vets went through after they came home.

Robin Williams is pretty terrible all around. Coked up monkeycheese bullshtein was acceptable in the 80s, but gets annoying real quick now.

Good thing that movie was made in 1987 which makes it ok for me to laugh at it.

Rome

Williams has a new tv show coming out with Buffy the Vampire Slayer as his co-star.

Odds of me watching that are about .000000000000000000000000001 to 1.

I generally dislike remakes but this is a movie that I've actually been waiting Hollywood to do a remake of for quite some time.  I loved the OG, but at the same time, it hasn't aged well at all and when I watch it with adult eyes vs the eyes of a 12 year old, it's actually pretty corny.  If they did it right, it could be a great remake.  And I might even check this out in the theater.

Rock of Ages - I guess that as far as musicals go, it wasn't bad.  If I'm seeing the stage version of this I might even love it but it just didn't really do anything for me on film.  Pretty much hated the bastichized versions of most of the songs they did, Tom Cruise was really annoying, and Alec Baldwin just didn't fit.  They did manage to recreate a pretty awesome 80s vibe with the acting and story, but someone farged up big time by including More Than Words in the soundtrack because the movie takes place in 1987 and that song didn't come out until 1990.  Same goes for the cheesy wannabe bubble gum white boy hip hop group they brought in towards the end of the movie.  New Kids didn't get big until the like 1989 and in 87 there really weren't any corny white boy rap groups like that as far as I can remember.  Not to mention that the clothes they were wearing was more on par with maybe 1992-93 timeframe.  So that was really irritating.  Basically when the movie ended I felt like I had 2 hours of my life stolen from me.
