Synecdoche, New York - definitely one of the top films of 2008.  charlie kaufman wrote and directed it and philip seymour hoffman is the shtein as usual.  about a director who is doing a play about his life and it's sometimes hard to tell which is which.  definitely a movie i'll probably have to watch again b/c i'm sure there's some stuff i missed.  sad but very good.  i think.

Saw Watchmen today.  Enjoyed it, but I think you'd really have to read the comic to follow it.  Visually very impressive, and the violence was undiluted, to say the least.

Two changes to the ending, one was fine, the other totally missed the point.  I have to assume stuff that hit the editing floor (rumor has it the Director's cut will be over 3.5h) will help make sense of it.  Some stuff just kind of appeared, with no context (again, if you hadn't read the comic).  Jack Earle Haley as Rorschach was by far the best role.

Just saw it in IMAX. It doesn't match the graphic novel (how could it?) but it was a lot better than I expected it to be.

I think I see eye-to-eye with you on the ending. The overall plot change was fine; some of the subtleties about how the end played out though failed to drive home the messages in the original story. There's a scene between Ozymandias and Dr. Manhattan that really should have been in there; instead it gets paraphrased in a bad love scene. As I suspected based on the previews, Ozymandias and Silk Spectre were the weak links in the acting.

I've read the original a billion times so I don't know how the film played out to people unfamiliar with the story. There's a lot of details to process. Overall I thought it was a successful adaptation of challenging source material.

I don't know what Watchmen is about other than a brief summay of the story I read on RT, was it worth the extra loot to see it in IMAX?

MadMarchHare

Probably.  A movie really can't encompass all the subtleties and nuances of the book, it's too complex.  But it can look really awesome, and it did.

Read the book first though.  And don't forget to rent Tales of the Black Freighter, coming out on March 24th.  It'll help explain the plot points a little (unless they farged it up).

So they did cut all the pirate stuff out of the movie?

The man. The myth. The legend.

rjs246

They would have to, otherwise the thing would be like 5 hours long.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?

Let them eat bootstraps.

Much of this wasn't CGI.  And that's funny coming from the guy that won't watch a movie pre-80s.

The pirate stuff is paralleling the story line, it could easily be cut out.  But the newspaper stand and the two guys in front of it are one of the things that becomes part of the storyline, but randomly appears without context.  The New Frontiersman is another, even moreso.  Still, all you hope for is that it looks cool and they don't farg with the storyline too much (i.e. hit the major themes correctly).  It did that, and I was satisfied with it.  The musical choices were laughable, however.  Wow, who would've thought to play Flight of the Valkyries during the Vietnam scenes?  And the song during the sex scene actually generated audible laughter in the audience I watched the movie with.

I guess you don't like any movie that has a scene where characters are driving somewhere.

Its funny you said that.  Last week my flight out of Fort Wayne, IN got canceled, and I was stuck in town.  So I had to make a quick 1 day car reservation.  When I went to the hertz counter and explained why I didnt give more notice the fat, gay, white dude said:
"Well, if you are stuck it town, you should catch the Madea move"
"No."
"Why not, it looks funny"
Blank stare

Completely threw me off.  Fat.  Gay.  White.  Fort Wayne IN.  Madea.
I'm not from Philly but some say I'm blunt.
