Battle of Thermopylae

A British author (his name is escaping me right at the moment) from Cambridge University listed the battle as one of the fifty greatest events in world history.  I'm reading that book right now.

I have a hard time understanding how anyone could not find that story interesting.

Of course 300 is not supposed to be historically accurate, but still, the very notion is fascinating. Thanks Geo.

I knew of Lord of the Rings, but never new what the hell Mordor was until i watched the movies...however I did know what Thermopylae was long before I ever knew 300 existed

you answered your own question

this battle is nothing more than a grossly exaggerated fable...im sure it was like a big bar fight of its time if it happened at all...but over the years its morphed into some mopar shtein...vvvrooom

who back in those times would have ever thought that their little fight would be a comic book movie one day

only in america

Most movies are not historically accurate and this one does not claim to be, but read Geo's links. It wasn't a small battle, or a historically insignificant one by any means. It was huge. Involving an army of hundreds of thousands against roughly 1000 soldiers. Did it involve CGI-created ogre-men? No. But the battle was an enormous fight in the Greco-Persian war.

You're not interested. That's fine. You don't read about or care about ancient history. In fact, you don't read much at all. That promotes your own ignorance, but is also your prerogative. Trying to convince everyone that no one would have any interest in this movie is idiotic because it has been shown time and time again that do people care about interesting historical events and like this kind of movie.

It will very easily be more on the LOTR/Gladiator side of things than the Sin City side of things when it comes to box office take.

i will bet anything you want...ANYTHING.... that it is closer to sin city than LOTR...please name your price...PLEASE

im too nice for that so what i will do is make a low stakes bet on whether its bigger than sin city or not...because thats the realistic wager here....obviously i have the under

Ive read LOTR many times. I never heard of this battle, nor did I know 300 dabbled in the battle as a basis. very interesting... :yay
