lord of the rings is considered american literature? im pretty sure tolkien was a brit.

its unbelievably popular in america...therefore it makes sense that the movie would be as well

oh i had absolutely no idea...but that is irrelevant here as i wasnt talking about where the author was from but the reasons why the movie was popular in america

the movies were popular because they were good.  most Americans who saw the movies did not read the books.

negative chief....the books were a huge draw pulling in a large cross section of people that normally wouldnt go near a movie like that....specifically 45-60 year olds...the movies would have done real well on their own...but the book factor put them over the top

thats neither here nor there tho..i was comparing lotr to 300 and why 300 will not come close to approaching the popularity of lord of the rings no matter how good it may be

I read all of the books as a kid, but I saw the first movie and was bored out of my skull.  I didn't bother to see the rest, though my wife loved them.

MURP

I watched all 3 movies and never read the books.  In fact, I wont ever read the books because Im going to spend that time watching 300 over and over.  And then after that, im going to watch Teen Wolf.

i didnt read them but i knew all about them (except the country of birth of the author) and i didnt know to many people growing up who didnt read the hobbit in school

reading the hobbit is one thing.  reading the trilogy is something entirely different.  fewer people have actually read the hobbit than you think vigy, and even fewer went on to digest the trilogy.

you're some kind of optimist.  that stuff is heavy reading to most Americans.

its awful reading is what it is...and really the number of poeple who actually read it is kind of irrelevant here..altho i think its more than you think it is...the bottom line is the movie had a large q rating when it came out and that was due to the books being popular

wrong again.  but that's cool.  you can have Renay Jackson and I'll take Tolkien and Herodotus.
