Straight Outta Compton was pretty good...I rented it last night. We were gonna go out to see Bridge of Spies but decided to stay in.

get shorty - first time seeing this...was much better than I thought but still felt like its overrated...travolta was surprisingly good...kind of reminded me of a weak watered down version of the player...which is one of the great movies of all time

6.5/10

50 shades of grey - basically was a lifetime movie with nudity...but at least some lifetime movies are so bad they are good...this was just a mess

2/10

lucy - holy shtein...literally unwatchable...turned it off about 35-40 minutes in and I never do that

0/10

sunlight jr - dope albeit pretty forgettable little character study of a couple trying to survive every day living in poverty...pretty depressing and not a whole lot happens but naimi watts and matt dillon are really good as the leads who are literally in every scene of the move

6/10

birdman - talk about brilliant acting...just amazing performances all around...you could tell they were all trying to one up each other and impress the director who was clearly getting the best out of everyone...gonzalez was incredible some of the long takes were ridiculously good and made to look no natural even tho its super hard to do..only complaint would be to say that it kind of got goofy anf ell off the rails a little towards the end...still a great movie

8/10

i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

saw spotlight yesterday

obviously bonerific for me since i was kind of a journalist for a bit. but beyond that it felt like 2016 all the presidents men, right down to having a bradlee in it. exceptionally good acting, great script and terrifically paced by templeton from the wire, who directed it. also look out for steindorf from the wire. the wire. 4.5/5
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

The Big Short wasn't bad. All star cast.

me and sunny saw the big short in the theater over the holidays....best movie of the year for me...the writing and really the movie in general reminded me so much of an arron sorkin project...one of the few movies that didn't disgrace the book

10/10

imitation game - sad but true story that was really well done...clichéd at times but still really good...cumberbatch is so good

8/10

guardians of the galaxy - started off pretty decent for sci fi but then descended into an hour long fight/escape scene spaceship chase to end the movie...had some good liners which was kinda suprising for that genre

4/10

siren - farging weird ass horror about three people who get stuc on an island and are terrorized by this chick...started off as sort of a skinemax ficl then went into weird ass horror...bizarre movie which literally does not have a single review on rotten tomatoes

5/10

I watched The Look of Silence, a powerful documentary about the Indonesian genocide of 1965-1966 that killed one million people (and was assisted by the USA). The movie follows a guy whose brother was killed in the genocide as he goes around interviewing and directly confronting all the men in his area who carried out the killings. No one involved in the genocide has been punished and many of the perpetrators are wealthy, powerful, and/or growing senile. Most of them seem to have no problem graphically describing the brutal murders they committed.

Imitation Game was my second favorite Oscar nominee last year after Whiplash.  Last year I saw all nominees except Budapest Hotel.  This year the only ones that I've seen are Mad Max (enjoyable but didn't seem Oscae worthy), The Revenant (very good - Tom Hardy is so good in every role), and The Martian (fine but overrated).

Re: birdman, it fell into the other best picture pool for me last year in that I liked them all but loved none besides Whiplash.  Best thing about Birdman is it reminded me why Edward Norton was my favorite actor for years.

oh whiplash was another one I watched last week in the snow...i wasn't as impressed as you were....the first half was excellent but it got really stupid and amazingly unrealistic towards the end....it basically was a showcase for skoda who was great

saw chi-raq yesterday. i mean i appreciate the anti-gun, anti-violence sentiment but good god i kind of hated this.

i honestly never even heard of it before yesterday and after looking at reviews this morning am really surprised that it gets such good ones.

felt like more of a wayans movie than spike lee except much less funny.

Hoping to see that this weekend.
