Most likely the only real reason you guys didn't like it as much as the original flicks is because unlike now, at that younger age, you didn't care to pick apart every aspect of film making.

Also, 40yrs after the original, the wow factor is kind of gone when it comes to space movies and special effects.

I'm seeing it this afternoon but this is exactly on point. I'm an adult now, for better or worse. I don't expect a sci-fi movie, even one as significant to my youthful memories as Star Wars, to be some sort of transcendent experience. I despised the prequels because not only were they stupidly written, poorly acted and dumbed down in every possible way, but they weren't any farging fun. I just want the new ones to be enjoyable to watch. They don't need to stimulate some deep intellectual need or be perfectly true to some imaginary Star Wars canon. Just be fun.

The spectactle of it is worth seeing on a big screen though I'm sure it'll be playing for two months so you have time.

Hateful Eight I'm really looking forward to.  Apparently it has an intermission?

supposedly an overature too....but i also thought i heard that theres different cuts of the movie and that not all theaters will show it with an intermission...pretty much every movie hes ever made has been to long but over three hours for this movie seems excessive even for him

I fell asleep watch django. Probably had more to do with being dead tired than the movie itself but still, after 2hrs I started nodding off.

Django is fun and I love it but it's not even close to the top tier of Tarantino movies. Partially because yes, it's overlong.

Star Wars review:  Decent space-adventure flick.  Not the mind-blowing, life-altering experience some want to make it out to be.

I haven't heard a single person describe it in those terms.

It was a fun popcorn movie.   Solid B+ on the enjoyment scale.

I know there's not many movie business nerds here but Star Wars' box office returns yesterday were absolutely staggering in dollar terms.  It made $40.1M whereas the all-time #2 made $27.6M.  It's now over $288M since it opened 4 days ago and worldwide it's already surpassed the $600M mark.  People in the business mocked Disney relentlessly when they shelled out over $4B for the rights to the series.  Guess they're not laughing now.

So. I really enjoyed TFA but, so help me god, I understand what SD was saying about it not feeling like a Star Wars movie. I don't agree with him, mind you, but I get it.

Here it is... The original trilogy drew clear ass clear lines between good and evil, dark and light. The entire three-movie build-up revolved around an ultimate blurring of that good/evil line. That was the whole point. The Force Awakens blurs that line almost immediately. Sure, Ren shows his bad guy bona fides early on but he is clearly a three-dimensional person with background and doubts. Vader was just bad. The end. Until... wait, maybe he wasn't! But that 'maybe' took forever to reveal and was a surprise and was what made Empire such a phenomenon. Introducing ambiguity and doubt from the very beginning opens the door for preemptively empathizing with Ren, which takes a lot of the fun out of it and makes it feel a whole lot less "like a Star Wars movie".

Beyond that, and even including that, I really liked it for what it was. A return to the Star Wars story that was actually fun and interesting instead of stupid and plodding.

I liked the character.  He's more compelling with the mask to me even though I don't mind Driver as an actor.  There's just something about the mask / voice combo that has great presence.

I just hope it goes a different route than the original series with Vader in terms of his arc / redemption.

You obviously don't have the same Facebook friends I do.  A solid handful were orgasmic in the praise of that movie.  I think a couple may have pulled a Pee Wee Herman in the theater.
