There was one redeeming scene. When he goes into the Jedi Temple, that had me believing in Vader up until the Noooooo.

Like the entirety of the Phantom Menace I'm going to try and forget everything from that scene starting after the table lifts up and you see Vader from the chest up. Just terrible... 10 seconds of film turned badass Vader into a complete simp. Just pathetic.

General_Failure

I almost cried when he did that. I think I may have even yelled "Fire! Bad!"

That's because he isn't supposed to be a badass at that point.  Remember, the Vader you meet in the OT experiences 30 years of life without something to live for.  What does he have?  Everyone he's cared for is dead now.  He spends the next 30 years colding killing things/people, without any emotional attachment to anyone anymore, and becomes the creature that you see in ANH/ESB.  The Vader in this, is still Anakin, who is an emotional, pathetic, mess.  Just because he puts on his suit doesn't make him superman automatically.

*Spoiler*
I thought they handled his reaction perfectly, as well as juxtaposing Vader's birth with Padme's death.

Exactly.  He kills like 30 little kids, yet his wife dying in childberth breaks his tiny wittle heart?

Ummm... helllllooooo?

Fricken Lucas.   :-D

Gee.....thanks for spoiling the ending Rome. :-D ;)

QuoteDepp To Reprise Role as Hunter S. Thompson

Johnny Depp is set to reprise his acclaimed role as journalist Hunter S. Thompson in the sequel to his 1998 hit Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. The follow-up, called The Rum Diary, is based on Thompson's very first novel, which journals his career and personal escapades in 1950s Puerto Rico. Depp is also acting as executive producer for the film. Thompson shot himself to death at his secure compound in Woody Creek, Colorado, on February 20.

That doesn't make it ruin the character any less. The first Vader suit scene shows him as a total Hoyda, and we're supposed to remember he's a badass in the original films? It would have worked much better if he Force chocked somebody and didn't stumble around. But no, they show him as a whiny little girl.

thing is, he wasnt a total badass in the original films, just in episode IV (where he was unaware of his kids). if he was he would have killed luke in empire. the dude could use the force for whatever he wanted, he could have kept him from falling down the shaft after he lopped off his hand. he wanted luke to join him because he thought he was doing the right thing.

and then again in Jedi, he was even more of a wuss. killing off the emperor to save luke. the whole point to episode III was that he was tricked into becoming darth vader because he wanted to save padme, not rule the universe (anakin wanted that too, but that was something he originally thought he could do as a jedi master).

all the while people assumed that he "turned" to the dark side as a consious decision was shown differently, the point was that he was tricked. anakin did not beleive he was tricked because all the while did beleive he was doing the right thing.

and he did "force choke" somebody. padme. the suit and mask did not make him darth vader, he was already vader at that point when he was taken in by palpatine.

the part of the movie when he was still anakin,  where Sidious/palpatine told the story of his master, that as his apprentice felt could only gain the power by killing his master. which he did. vader never does this. and he is considered anakin again in ROTJ when he eventually does kill palpatine.

He Force chocked Padme, and probably one of the seperatist leaders, but the was no Force chocking with the Vader suit involved.

I said there was some good no-suit-Vader scenes. The Jedi temple is a big one. Him crawling after the big fight scene. They set up the transition to Vader, the masked bringer of death from Ep IV. Instead they have him sobbing like a little girl that lost her binky.

i see you're point. but i think if he just goes from a normal jedi knight, to the episode IV vader, he becomes a much shallower character. it had to be a painful transition with lots of internal conflict.

just my opinion on it.

as far as the "NOOO" scream, it was in homage to frankenstein. (could have been better) just as the arena seen in episode II was an homage to the old stop-motion ray harryhausen movies (jason and the argonaughts, clash of the titans) as that is where lucas' vision started. so i didnt mind it so much.

I got the Frankenstein thing, but I didn't think it fit. And while I'm at it, did he look shorter this time? I could have sworn Vader was taller.

MadMarchHare

No, what I mind is a very good F/X guy mistakenly thinking he can direct or write.  That's where the trouble began.

he was, i think david prowse (the original guy in the costume) was said to be 6 inches taller. so they had to fugde it. they ran into the same issue with vader duels in EV and EVI with the stunt guy. that could have been why he wasnt "on screen" so much in costume.

the mistake made was have hayden play "costume vader"...after all, his legs were gone, so "making" taller was not out of the question. they shouldnt have messed with the height.
