I saw Gran Torino yesterday.  Some of the writing was lousy, and some of the acting was worse.  There are a few good scenes, and Eastwood is excellent.  On the whole, I was disappointed but mildly entertained.

The hmong kid seemed like that movie was the first thing he acted in his life.

I believe all the Hmong actors in the movie had never acted before.
Anyone but Reid.

The Orphanage. 5/5. A perfect ghost story movie. Builds suspense, keeps you interested. Good shtein.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?

del Toro is awesome, gives me hope that the Hobbit will turn out OK.
Anyone but Reid.

At least it will be better than that crap LOTR series was as long as its one movie.

I might be the only one but I think I fell asleep through the 2nd and 3rd one. I lost track of all the characters after the first one. First one kept my attention and was very interesting. Maybe I should have read the books first.

If you couldn't stay awake during the movies you wouldn't have lasted a chapter reading the books

I learned as much last night talking with some people about the movie.  It doesn't make the acting any better to know it, but now I see the film a bit differently.  I don't think it should be winning anything, but now that I understand a bit better what Eastwood was doing with it, I'm less critical.

Books are different for me. I never fall asleep while reading a book unless its a physics text book or if I was sleepy to begin with. Plus with a book you can pace yourself. LOTR was a massive bore fest to me.

encounters at the end of the world - thought it would be better after reading all the rave reviews but it was a little to disjointed and random for me....its done by werner herzog who is a master of docs (did the excellent grizzly man)..anyway its interesting and very depressing theres lots of doomsday scenarios and talk of how humans are killing the planet...but its definitely worth netflixing...i liked not loved it

6.5/10

They're not an easy read. It's written in a whole different language and it's detailed as hell. Tolkien uses an entire page to describe a landscape. Not to mention the movies left out a ton of shtein.

I dunno, I like the LOTR movies.  But then again, I'm a level 8 mage with 45 mana.
I'm not from Philly but some say I'm blunt.

Taken = 5/10

Liam Neeson was pretty good. He's a retired CIA/intelligence/black ops guy whose daughter is kidnapped in Paris and he goes and gets her back. I had no real expectations going in other than wanting to see a decent flick and it achieved that for me.
