The only problem with that line of thinking is that the "psycho babble bullshtein" is what the show is really about at the end of the day.  It might not be why many people watch, but that's how it was designed and built.

when its really happening on the show it works wondefully as it relates to his job family ect...many of the melfi sessions are classic...however when its an entire episode worth of dream sequence its a waste of friggin time

same thing with the big Hoyda stuff...his internal battle over killing him and finally doing so = some of the best tv ever made...the cheesy dream sequences over killing him that followed = awful

what he would have been like if he didnt go into the mob world, and he handles situations without the tough guy imagine. the lonliness he has inside (in the hotel room at the end), how people truly feel about him (mobsters=business, family=actually personally care).

wouldnt be much of a show if he did that.

Cast members of hit mafia series The Sopranos are demanding higher salaries after the show's bosses extended the period over which they will broadcast the final 20 episodes. Stars including Michael Imperioli, who plays Tony Soprano's hotheaded nephew Christopher, and Lorraine Bracco, who plays Tony's shrink, Dr. Melfi, are having their pay renegotiated after insisting that splitting the series is equivalent to two season's work rather than one, according to the Wall Street Journal. However, bosses at HBO disagree, claiming that all 20 episodes are still part of the same season and do not warrant double pay. Sopranos star James Gandolfini has already successfully renegotiated himself a $1 million deal for each of the final eight shows, and more minor characters hope to follow suit. Despite the confusion, a spokesman for HBO is adamant cast members will not stage a walkout: "We're confident that everyone will be signed for the last eight episodes."
