Nobody would have been able to lift his helmet to throw it.

QuoteFalcons | Mathis Injury Could be Career Threatening

Steve Wyche, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports the knee injury suffered by Atlanta Falcons CB Kevin Mathis (knee) could be a career-threatening injury. He landed awkwardly during practice Wednesday, Sept. 14. As previously noted he tore his anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments and damaged his posterior capsule and his hamstring in his left leg. Surgery will be scheduled soon and he will be placed on the Injured Reserve list. "You hate to lose a player like Kevin because he brings so much to the team on the field and in the locker room," head coach Jim Mora said. "We have to find a way to go on and not make excuses."

DT Lavalais among 10 players fined by NFL

September 15, 2005
NEW YORK (Ticker) - Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Chad Lavalais' helmet-first hit on Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb on Monday drew the stiffest of 10 fines levied against players from both teams.

On Thursday, the NFL fined Lavalais $7,500 for his hit and Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter and Falcons defensive backs Kevin Mathis and DeAngelo Hall $5,000 each for their roles in a pregame fight.

"It was definitely a learning experience," Hall told ESPNews. "Things got a little bit heated."

With 8:24 left in the first quarter, Lavalais hit the chest of McNabb with his helmet as the quarterback unloaded a deep pass intended for Terrell Owens. The pass was intercepted by Hall and no penalty was called on the play as McNabb remained on the ground wincing in pain.

McNabb did not miss any snaps, completing 24-of-45 passes for 257 yards in a 14-10 loss. However, he is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against San Francisco with a bruised chest.

During pregame warmups, Trotter was jawing with a host of Falcons before Mathis approached and struck him in his facemask, beginning a wild scene at midfield in which players and coaches tried to separate the brawlers.

Trotter and Mathis were ejected after officials consulted the replay monitor. Hall, who was guilty of facemask grabbing and throwing an opponent's helmet to the turf, was not ejected but received the same fine as the primary combatants.

Falcons safeties Keion Carpenter and Kevin McCadam and cornerback-kick returner Allen Rossum were fined $2,500 for being active participants in the melee. Eagles linebackers Keith Adams, Jason Short and Mike Labinjo fined $2,500 for their roles.

We can close the book on this now...

Lavalais - $7500 (for hit on McNabb)
Trotter, K. Mathis, D. Hall - $5000 each
K. Carpenter, A. Rossum, K. McCadam, K. Adams, J. Short, M. Labinjo - $2500 each

Yes, Lavalais's hit was illegal.  Yes, Hall should have been tossed, but wasn't.  Whatever.

Go Eagles.  Kill 49ers.

Yep.
