The reason I don't buy that argument is baseball has ALWAYS been about stats.  More than any sport, numbers and stats were discussed.   Records in baseball were legendary and way better known than in any other sport.  It's part of why people hated the steroid era so much because iconic records fell.  The type of numbers being discussed changed and statheads now reject the importance of some numbers that were always revered.  That's what irks people.  VORP replacing RBIs.  But let's not act like the importance of stats in baseball is a new thing.  You can say that but I don't agree with it at all. 

Regarding igy's point about preferences changing, that's happened to me as I've gotten older.  The NFL and college basketball are still my favorite sports, but college football and the NBA have passed baseball and the NHL.   Part of it is the mediocrity of the phillies and the zesty outlook probably, but I can't bring myself to care about any generic baseball game anymore.  Baseball used to easily be my second favorite professional sport and now it may be fourth.
