If it weren't for the US getting involved, the entire world would have fallen to the Axis powers.   Suggesting otherwise is just revisionist nonsense.

I'm not beating my chest about our "victory" over Japan either.  We did what was necessary against an enemy that would not have thought twice about using nukes against us.  They as an empire deliberately used mass murder and rape as tools of subjugation.   Again, pure evil.

Quote from: Munson on February 03, 2014, 10:40:27 AMThe amount of effort that went into defending Stalingrad is still amazing to read.

That and others most people have forgotten ever happened at all.  Several times Russia lost more soldiers in a single battle than the U.S. did in the entire war.

Well if you want to put it that way, sure.  But that's quite a different thing than saying that the U.S. "finished" WWII.  In Europe, Russia finished it.  Deal with it.

One of the few movies about Russia in WWII is "Enemy at the Gates".  Always thought it was a very underrated war flick.  Sure everyone has weird english accents, but the opening sequence of Stalingrad, and how soldiers were sent in on locked rail cars, made to march out onto the battlefield without any weapon, and wait for someone to die around them to grab a Mosin.  Pieces of meat.

Yeah I always liked that one too, and it is very loosely based on a true story. Of course the movie took extreme liberties with the story and what actually happened, but I've definitely read about that real life sniper duel in a few books and it's a pretty entertaining story. If I remember correctly, I think the story goes that the other sniper had the Zaytsev pinned down and Zaytsev had no idea where he was, until he saw a random reflection off the scope lens of the German's, underneath a pile of rubble.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Yup.  They forced the love angle, and a few other things, but the underlying story was compelling.  A battle of snipers, amongst a battlefield like no other.

I re-watched The Pacific a few months back, and it just doesn't come anywhere close to holding water to BOB.

This guy wants to take over Trey Radel's seat in Congress.  For those that don't know, Radel was the representative who just resigned following an arrest for buying cocaine from an undercover cop.  He's wasn't technically my representative, but was for most of Naples and Fort Myers.

Naples is currently a Tea Party haven.  It may make Phreak's digs look liberal in comparison.

The Five is such a joke of a show. Well, I guess not, since it's on Fox.

I've always known he's a cynical, dishonest mercenary, the media equivalent of an '80s era WWF "manager."  This whole story line of his marriage to a right wing nut has always made me sick.  Nothing but two people who suck satan's dick and make slightly different noises while they do it.

May they all rot in hell.
