i recently turned two half gallons of grape juice into wine using yeast, etc.

it actually tasted really good, regular grape juice was better than white. don't know what the alcohol content was but it's definitely higher than normal store wine...got 3 of us super drunk.

was more just a science experiment than anything as bottles of grape juice are probably more expensive than a cheap bottle of wine but it was fun to try.

so you'll be bringing some down to the tailgates ?

Oh and Munson, the Homebrew store in the Shoppes of Loviers is awesome.  They really help you thru what flavors you're looking to get, and how to emulate some more famous recipes by other larger microbreweries.  They also have a wine brewing section that looks interesting, but I think Matty has that market cornered with Welch Drank.

Yeah I believe that's the store I googled and found. Like I said all I have is the Mr. Beer kit, when I move out of here eventually I'd like to get a full sized brew kit and try it out. But for now I have that Randall jr. that dogfish sells, and they said I should try out some hops and malts in it. I tried it fruiting some Goose Island Summer beers last week with my girl using strawberries and blackberries, and it turned out okay.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Basically go into that store, they'll get you out under 150, and you'll be able to brew for years down the road.  Its the up front costs that discourage people from trying. My buddies keg theirs so it keeps the costs down.

Stopped in the home DFH brewpub tonight. Had the current DNA offering, a cherry saison. Very nice. Also checked the "secret stash" board, and picked up two bottles of '06 Raison d'Extra for a tailgate treat this fall.

I'm not a saison guy normally, but the cherry (and honey and fennel) made it crisp and refreshing.

Did a 2 hour walk through on brewing at the Keystone Brewing Company today. Here's the kit I bought:

Bought ingredients to make a pumpkin ale. Gonna do my first brew this weekend.

Looks good. Make sure you're working totally clean, and watch for any source of possible contamination. Do that, and you'll be fine.

I got zesty playing horse shoes last night. $100 pot winner takes all. Was 19-18 us and the other team gets a ringer. Game over. Now that I think about it I should have cut short last night because my throws weren't as good as when the tourney started.

Bout to brew my first batch.

Finishing up my first batch

Is the PAM part of the recipe?

My old neighbor use to brew his own beer.  It was some good shtein.

Pumpkin Ale actually sounds pretty darn good.  Let us know how it turns out.

I might have pitched the yeast at too high of a temp. The thermometer on the side of the bucket isn't working so it was hard to tell the temp. I added cold water to the wort and let it sit in my sink in ice water for 40 minutes. Recommendation on the recipe was 20 minutes but you can never be sure. I have it formenting in my basement in a bucket of water because temps are going to be in the 80's and 90's the next few days.
