Pretty sure the first amendment supersedes any "conduct detrimental to the team" bullshtein.

And settle your ass down, Chuggie.  You'll buy the ticket and you'll watch the games.  If you can get past Vick playing for this team, you can accept a racist honky third string wideout playing for them.

Diomedes

The First Amendment doesn't exempt you from "at will" employment laws.  You can be fired for almost anything, including threatening to jump a fence and fight all the stillupfronts here.

Basically this.  The first amendment has no bearing on Cooper's continued place on the team.

Diomedes

The agreement between the players union and the NFL team owners however..that may have something to say about what teams can do with players who displease them legally.

I'm certain the NFLPA isn't going to have its membership go out on strike to protect the civil liberties of Riley Cooper.

My point is if he gets cut and the NFL blackballs him because of this incident, they're going to find themselves in court.

Diomedes

And the plaintiff will be the NFLPA.

Riley himself won't have a claim.

Regarding cutting Cooper...what does the CBA say?  Could the team actually cut him for this non-crime, off-the-field incident?  If they did, would they open themselves to a lawsuit from the Players Union?

they can cut him with no recourse....what the union would fight for is this years salary being paid in full

Nice message to the rest of the team there Kelly.

This incident is the beginning of the end of the Kelly regime. Boat never left the dock. It was sunk before it sailed.

hes over his head anyway....this was pretty much the last thing he needed...and reason number 26 to get rid of the redneck

Until the league decides to force the change in DC, Goodall, media and every team owner/mgmt. group will twist their pretzel logic every time this comes up. If Lurie really had a sack, they'd be parlaying this into a forced boycott of DC until they change it. "My Eagles will not play in that stadium until they do." Now is the time or it all rings false. farg cooper - journeyman at best and irrelevant to the dialog go-forward unless team and local media does what it should. But nope - all are too afraid to get cut-off from league access. And Lurie's too afraid of the other owners. Thing is its a "no-lose" position. (But then again this is the town that gave the world Ben Chapman so yeah not likely to lead on this one either...)

Call Budweiser, call Chevy, call all the advertisers out and force them to justify their continued support of "taterskins"...

Unless of course the debate is about "equivalency"....i.e. would Cooper have been OK if he merely said "I'll fight every Blackskin...?" With continued league, team, media and advertiser silence during this opportunity, I guess it is. Also Barry likes weighing on this type of stuff  - here's his chance literally right in his own back yard...

great points....unfortunately this will never happen...blacks dont even care about indians much less old white men...which is ironic cause indians were shtein on even more than blacks in this country...youd think they have a common thread....fact is tho more than half the washington fanbase is made up of blacks who would be salty as farg if the name was changed

Hey, imagine that.  It turns out black people are just like all other large groups of people.  They don't much care about who's getting farged over so long as it's not them.

Yay humans.

I just watched Django Unchained for the first time. I couldn't help but wonder if this was Riley Cooper's favorite movie.
I said watch the game and you will see my spirit manifest.-ILLEAGLE 02/04/05
