well i mean gillick might not have given choke 125 or traded lee the first time around or signed papeldouche...theres tons of armchair gming you can do to fix this team

but based on who had they had on the roster, once 2011 happened, yeah it was over
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

the future isnt going to be any better because smug has to win 2014...or at least he feels he has to

which is why at best young, ruiz, delmon young, maybe kendrick get traded

next year is going to be much of the same, if not worse. especially if they godfather utley and keep cesar and galvis in limbo (remind you of how they treated hof?)

Gillick would have made the Howard deal.  Every GM in the sport would have at the time.   That's the truth despite the fact it turned out to be a huge mistake.  The mistake Amaro made was putting all his eggs in the pitching basket.  He modeled the team after the 90's Braves and no one bothered to remind that smug dickface that the Braves only won (1) championship with that model, and they didn't build the team around 30-something pitchers either.  Glavine, Smoltz & Maddux weren't all nearing the downside of their careers back then like Lee, Halladay & Oswalt.  In fact when they won the thing they were all in their late 20's.

MDS

the choke deal was crushed at the time...you gave 5/125 2.5 YEARS before he was due to a big bodied hr hitter. historically those guys break down. and howard was already regressing for the last 1.5 years when he signed it.

even so...why not wait, i dont know, 2 more years before locking him up? he was still under your control until 2011. jesus.

Why did the Angels give Pujols the deal they gave him or Josh Hamilton?  Why did the Tigers give Prince Fielder that deal?  Or how about Texiera & A-Rod for that matter?

Sluggers get huge deals and they almost never live up to them.  It's not just Choke, dude.

MDS

fielder has...some of that may be due to cabrera, though

but yes. sluggers dont live up to their deals. so why give them one?

Fielder was 27 when he got paid.  Howard was 31.  Huge difference.  And we'll see how Fielder is looking at age 33.

I disagree. I think with Gillick, the Phils are still pretty good. Maybe not legit WS contenders, but they're still a playoff team....or are at least in the mix.  The core players would still be old, but I don't think Gillick drops $50mil on a closer or sells the farm.  They won a WS on his watch so he wouldn't feel the same pressure to duplicate it at all costs like Rube has.  Even if he gives Choke his contract, I think he spends the other money he has more wisely than Rube. For Pap's salary alone, they could have added a couple decent bats to the lineup.

Munson

Apparently the Phils had a scout watching Carlos Martinez last night. Get.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

MDS

rube wants the farm for lee
rube cant trade papelbon because everyone knows he sucks
rube wont trade utley because he wants to work out an extension with a 35 year old organization clogging second baseman with a degenerative knee issue
rube cant trade jimmy because hes 10-5

but im sure it all turns around in 2014 and they win the world series!

HPV can still pitch but him shooting his come dumpster off and the albatross contract make his departure all but impossible unless they pick up a large share.

charlie just said on the radio that chase utley is probably a 130 game a year player for another couple of years.....probably true but also probably not info you should be putting out there 48 hours before the trade deadline

Phils aren't moving him, so it really doesn't matter.  He could be a 30 game a year player and he's still making them boatloads of money in jersey sales.
