shotgun I has always been run from both five and seven yards...the "inventor" of the pistol or vorpy football nerds can call it the pistol if they want but to me if it doesnt include a read option association then its just jerks renaming a long existing formation...it would be a like a college coach inplementing a wishbone but calling it the arrow offense

truth be told the shotgun I has also always been used to run option at the college level...just not as a base offense like it is now...more in the way a bubble screen would be called now or to a lesser extent a reverse....like as a play here or there to keep the defense honest
