It's not that odd.  Shurmer has a decade (or more) experience at the NFL level.  Admittedly his offensive philosophy is about as different as it gets from Kelly's, but that might be a sign that Kelly is willing to accept a more conventional offensive approach than he employed at Oregon.   Shurmer also has an intimate knowledge of the Eagles management having worked there forever, so it might also be a question of comfort for Kelly having a guy there who's been there and done that before.

I was concerned there would be NFL virgins across the board in the coaching dept

Please to explain.

As I understand it, Kelly is a high risk/high reward guy who schemes plays that either go nowhere, or for big gains.  There ends my understanding.

Odd in the sense that there is no Kelly/Shurmur connection that I know of. And their offensive philosophies are not very similar. A gambler who runs up tempo along with a traditionalist who likes the short WCO game.

Shurmur was O/C in St. Louis and Steven Jackson ran the farg out of the ball while he was there.  He also helped mentor Sam Bradford during his rookie season, which is good news for Foles.

People are overly focused on schemes and styles. I have no doubt's it's going to be Kelly's offense to run, I'm guessing he wanted an OC with NFL experience and experience with this specific offense to assist him.

They did.   Pretty much diametrically different, actually, other than using 11 guys.

So again...can someone explain how they differ?

Sure... Shurmer's is more friendly for a goofy, gangly white QB.

Shurmur ran a variant of the WCO in St. Louis which employed short passing and running the ball more often than a classic WCO.  Kelly ran a no huddle track meet at Oregon.  Seriously, they couldn't be more different.
