Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

yeah I think the compromise is constitutional.  I'm just saying lots of people are focused on the stupidity of the church and their stance on contraceptives (and it is stupid) whereas the initial controversy was a larger question of what the government can regulate in regards to religion.

i completely disagree with this

this was a straight up attack on women veiled as a religious freedom thang...again it goes right in line with the attacks on planned parenthood and the ultrasound rape bills that are flying around the country

the whole thing is a complete joke and has absolutely nothing to do with religion...because again if im not mistaken catholics are pretty hardcore against abortion...yet they want the religious freedom to make sure there is a massive increase in abortions?...gimme a break about the religious freedom bullshtein.....this is about angry old men wanting to control women...especially women who have sex...

I'm not talking about what the church wants, I'm talking about the legality of the bill passed.  A bill passed which regulates the Church often is on tenuous grounds.  Therefore, for it to be a valid bill, the ISSUE is whether the government can provide legislation impacting the church when it enters the sphere of health care/employee benefits.  You can say all you want, but that's the constitutional question about whether the bill was valid in the first place.  The government can't generally tell the church it must provide contraceptives.  Can it when the church isn't functioning as "the church"?  I think so, but THAT is the legal issue at hand in regards to the original proposed bill.

Eagles_Legendz

and obviously you're right about the right kicking up dust about it for the reasons you mentioned.  that fact doesn't preclude the bill itself from being an unconstitutional overreach of governmental power.  the two are not mutually exclusive.

ice grillin you

the government isnt coming close to regulating the church but you know this...the church has no right to determine what medicine people get

and as far as im concerned the church lost all its rights when it became a world wide child sex network

it lost all its rights when it build its self on a lie, just like every religion did

well thats where all this nonsense starts....unfortunately our idiotic country puts religion (really christianity) above it citizens...but yes its absolutely mind boggling that most of this country agrees that a person/group can be allowed to determine what medicine someone else gets simply because they happen to believe in a certain fairy tale

"coming close" isn't really true.  church has every right in this country for better or worse to regulate itself.

if the government passed a law that said the church needed to have a basket full of contraceptives at its entrance, that law would be illegal.  it wouldn't be doctrinally impacting what the church stands for, but would still be an impermissive extension of power.

here, since the church is advertising itself as a health care provider and/or employer, I think it becomes subject to regulations other health care providers or employers have to deal with but there are people (beyond just the crazy right) who disagree with that.

Eagles_Legendz

and to clarify one last time, I am NOT saying the church should do that, or that it's a good idea, or that it makes sense, or that the right isn't waging war on women .  All I'm addressing is the legitimacy of federal legislation as it concerns the church, and no matter how much people may dislike the protection the church is afforded in this country, it doesn't mean they aren't treated differently.  They are, and the government has to tread lightly in terms of legislation which impacts the church in any way.

speaking of unconstitutional shtein, McDonnell just signed the transvaginal ultrasound bill into law in Va.  That bill dies the first time it gets to the SCOTUS.

Munson

I really, really hope people get out and vote these morons out of power in 2012 in the state legislatures.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

So the Catholic Church is in league with the right now and bishops just decided to raise their voice as a propaganda mouthpiece of the right wing?   Not only would Catholic institutions have been forced to provide contraception, but also the morning after pill, which the church views as an aborticide.

I'm also confused how the right is raging war on women because it doesn't think that the religious institutions need to provide contraceptions in their healthcare plan?  Fluke could have went to social services, and gotten the contraceptions as a low-income student.  If that wasn't an option, places like Wal-mart sell contraception for 9 bucks a month.  I guess her 3000 claim was grossly exaggerated.

Another shill of the left wing, getting paid and flown around the country to try and help Obama's numbers increase among the female demographics and sadly it worked.

first of all im just shocked that you would be confused about something

1. blunt amendment - had little to nothing to do with the catholic church
2. rape ultrasounds - has nothing to do with the catholic church
3. rush limbaugh - savaging women on his radio show has nothing to to with the catholic church
4. rick santorum - wants birth control abolished....rick santorum has nothing to do with the catholic church

obama already met the church halfway in early february by saying they didnt have to supply contraception....the insurance companies do

again this isnt a catholic church or religious rights issue in the least...99% of catholic women take birth control and catholic institutions have been offering insurance plans for years that have covered both contraception and abortion services...the two things that are in play here are

women rights - the right as they usually do are trying to strip rights from anyone who isnt white male and christian

obamacare - they obviously want it dead....which is fine...but they are going about it in completely the wrong way

Lol.   Show me the proof that catholic institutions have provided coverage that included contraception and abortion.   If they did why would bishops suddenly be upset.

Also you have no problem with Maher savaging women on his show.  I guess you are a crusader for women unless they are on the right.
