Why do you need linebackers and safeties on a defense?

Hi guys, I'm new to the board. Football isn't my number one sport so maybe the knowledgeable fans here can explain something to me. Why do you need linebackers and safeties for a good defense? Isn't the NFL today about getting pressure with your line and providing coverage with your corners? If so, shouldn't you be able to survive with linebackers and safeties not up to par?

When you have guys like Trent Cole, Jason Babin, Cullen Jenkins on your line and Nnamdi Asomugha, Asante Samuel, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie as your cornerbacks then it still isn't good enough even with weaknesses at other positions? How many other teams in the NFL have 6 Pro Bowl capable guys on defense?

That is 6 Pro Bowl capable players out of 11 starters. Shouldn't you have a good defense with that many impact players even if the other 5 are lacking. I don't know the x's and o's so please explain why you can't survive without linebackers and safeties.

Thanks....

at least you're starting to ask the right questions Andy.  welcome to the board.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Easiest way to answer those questions is to watch the Eagles D for the last three games, then you will know why.

Thanks for the replies

But I was wondering if maybe a more experienced defensive coordinator could find a way to turn it into a good defense with all of those good players.
