They only mention the broadway stint, but left out all the shows he played with Dolly Parton and Hank Williams, or the piano playing for Elvis.

Wait, are you saying your grandfather played the piano with Elvis Presley?  That's pretty amazing.  Can you post some pics or something?  I never knew somebody that who related to a celebrity.

I'm loving the sarcasm, but I'll indulge you anyway Yeti. He's not motown Shorty Long obviously. He was sent to Italy when he was a teen to learn classical instruments and music and etc, but took the violin lessons and ended up being very into the country/western sound of the day with fiddles and such.

But my family was connected to Motown too, and just music in general. My late uncle was asked by the Temptations to manage them in the early 80s, but he declined because my cousin had just been born at the time. He was invited a few times on stage to sing with them, though.

And yes, we have a magazine here with pictures of my grandfather in the studio with Elvis, but I don't feel like scanning them. google to the rescue.

My old man says he still remembers the phone ringing when he was a little kid and him picking up and Elvis being on the other line. Some of the shtein and memorabilia my family has from that time is pretty cool, even if it's not my kind of music.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Yeah it's definitely a pretty cool story to tell. I meet so many people I don't know when I'm up in that area, the random people that just know my family because of him and my grandmother. When he died, the viewing was public and lasted over 12 hours.

The musical he was in, The Most Happy Fella, was the one featured in the I Love Lucy episode where they go to a show on broadway. Two of the songs that they actually show them sitting through/listening to are the two songs my grandfather was featured on.

There's also a story where apparently his band in Chicago was the band originally picked to sing "Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer", but a night of drinking and mexican food in celebration of the studio time led to them calling in sick the next day :-D
