Farms contribute about 40% of the pollution (nitrogen and phosphates) to the bay, making them the largest single source.  But it is also true that they are being pressured to improve, and are in fact doing so.  Meanwhile, cities and suburbs continue to increase the amount of pollution they put into the water system.  It's easier to target farms and get them to change because, despite their powerful lobbies, they are only so many of them, and their behavior is easily monitered and changed.  Getting people to stop putting poison on their lawn, to stop dumping hazardous products down the drain, to stop paving everything they can, that is a lot harder to do.  You get people crying "big government won't let me pave my driveway just because it's on the bay."  "Big government won't let me use phosphate heavy dish detergents."  "Big government is ruing our lives."

I took by son to the doctor yesterday because his eyes were swolled up from the cold.  She examined him, said the swelling was not anything to worry too much about, that it had to do with the cold, etc.  But she prescribed anti-biotic eye drops anyway.  She was clear that he probably didn't need them, in fact that though the prescription was for five days, he could probably stop after two.  WTF I'm thinking.  If he doesn't need this, why prescribe it?  And if he does take it, aren't you supposed to run the full course of anti-biotics to make sure the bacteria doesn't develop a resistance to the drug?  And finally, getting to my point, what happens to this stuff after it leaves his system and enters the water system? Do the farging crabs oysters and rockfish need this shtein?  No.  We put the script on the fridge and if he doesn't clear up, we'll fill it.  The swelling is already almost gone.

People have to think about how their actions affect the world.   It would be nice if people did think about this shtein, but by and large they don't.  That's why I support big government.  Without the government preventing people from paving a ten car parking lot in their bayside mcmansion, without government telling dish detergent companies they can no longer put phosphates in their products, without government banning poisonous lawn care products, the bay will only get worse.  Even if the farmers do their part.

Because of the nature of this shtein...I doubt there are official statistics...but I know this shtein must occur on the daily. Being poor is not an excuse to be an animal.

Living in the slums, ghettos, etc.....I've never agreed with that mentality. Unfortunately, is a 'kill or be killed' mentality that rules these places which is why people do the shtein they do...but farg...shtein like this must happen to hundres of people daily. I don't really give a shtein about kids...but farg man...these are kids.  My god. The thought of living in fear or fear of being victimized...even in my own home is unphathomable.
