What IGY said.  I had zero confidence in them winning today, and dont like for the rangers season to come down to a farging shootout.  farg NY, but its a zesty way to win, though the way the flyers played for the most part, they deserved the win.  They played aggressive, smart, and disciplined.

i've heard a lot of people saying this since yesterday, even going so far as to say that the nhl should treat it like a playoff game and eliminate the shoot out and i completely disagree.  it's 1 of 82 regular season games and i'm sure both teams probably have at least 6 or 7 losses/ties from the year that they could point to and say they let that game slip away.  just because 2 teams can't seperate themselves and take care of business during the first 81 games of the year doesn't mean that the 82nd game should be treated any differently.

no, but it goes to show how ridiculous it is end any game with a farging skills competition.

Sunny got it right, you're gay for enjoying an all star competition determine who goes to the playoffs.  Yesterday was just the perfect example, not to mention how you get the same amount of points for a shootout win, makes no farging sense

RIF dookies.  i think the shoot out is fun to watch.  i also said i agree that it's a horrible way to end the game.  but that's the rule and i think it's silly to complain about the season coming down to a shoot out because both teams had plenty of opportunities during the regular season to get that extra point that they needed to lock up a playoff spot before the final game of the year.

that makes no sense whatsover...its like saying the nfl overtime shouldnt have been changed since both teams had chances all game to win in regulation...one has nothing to do with the other...what happened in game 27 is not even closely related to determining a playoff spot in overtime of game 82

and the shootout isnt even fun to watch...its boring as farg

The good news is you get Jim Jackson and the fellas for the entire first round.

had the rangers or flyers won game 27 instead of losing it or finishing in a tie, game 82 (and it's shoot out to end it) becomes completely irrelevent.  i've seen you argue in the phillies threads in years passed when the phils got off to a bad april start how it would bite them in the ass at the end of the season.  and now you're making the exact opposite argument when it comes to hockey?  come on dooks.

for a person who has a hard time watching 1 period, let alone an entire game, the shoot out is fun for me to watch.  but i can certainly see how an actual hockey fan would not find as much enjoyment in it, especially to determine the outcome of a game.  it'd be kind of like having a fg kicking contest to determine the winner of a football game.

Overtimes, shootouts reach record levels

With 24 regular-season games still remaining, 2009-10 already is assured of having more hockey played than any season in NHL history.

The 2009-10 season has seen a record 289 games that needed to go past regulation to determine a winner. That includes 113 games that have been decided in overtime, and a record 176 that have gone to a shootout. The previous highs were 282 overtime games, set last season, and 164 shootouts in 2006-07.

It's been a good season for goaltenders in the shootout. Shooters have scored on just under 32 percent of their 1,345 attempts, the lowest figure since the post-overtime tie-breaker was instituted for the 2005-06 season. As a result, the average shootout this season has seen a record 7.6 attempts taken -- up from 6.7 last season.

A record seven shootouts have gone 10 rounds or more, including two (Detroit-Nashville, 11 rounds, March 27; Phoenix-Nashville, 10 rounds, Feb. 2) that decided games which were scoreless through 65 minutes.

Shootout brilliance can come from unexpected sources. Phoenix set an NHL record this season with 14 shootout wins; the Coyotes got a big boost from defenseman Adrian Aucoin, who had never taken a shootout attempt before this season but has earned the nickname "The Closer" by going 6-for-8 -- with all six goals deciding the outcome.

There's no advantage to being the home team in a shootout -- visiting teams lead 89-87 and have won just over 50 percent of the shootouts in each of the last four seasons.

Nor is going first an advantage. Home teams won 51.7 percent in 2005-06, when the League mandated that visiting teams must shoot first; since then, the vast majority of home teams have opted to shoot first -- but have won slightly less than half of those games. Home teams shooting first this season have won 71 of 145 shootouts, a winning percentage of .490; those who shoot second are 16-15, a .516 winning percentage.

There was one first in the shootout this season -- on April 1, the New Jersey Devils and Chicago Blackhawks went to a shootout at the Prudential Center and the Devils opted to shoot first, something they never had done since the home team was first given the option in 2006. It didn't work, as the Blackhawks' Jonathan Toews scored on the first shot and Chicago won, 1-0, giving the Hawks a 2-1 win.
so the Leagues team the Coyotes had 14 wins all from a shootout, makes sense

i still dont get what winning game 27 has to do with deciding a playoff spot on a shootout
