Boondock saints II:
The first one seemed to either be loved or hated.  I am in the category of people who love it.  If you hated it, then you aint watching this one anyway.

Its not a bad movie, but its not a great movie either.  Too much of a homage to the first one.  Examples:
The "buddy" character in the first movie: Rocco.  In the second: Romeo
Both movies, they F with the buddy before revealing themselves.
Both movies has a "hit gone wrong" with a organization not associated with the main antagonists.  (First movie, it was when they fell out of the ceiling trying to take out the Russians)
In both movies, the detectives, Smecker then, now Bloom, get increasingly involved in the recreation of the crime scene.  (THERE WAS A FIREFIGHT!)
Even some small one liners, like with the Irish cops using what they learned from Smecker with their analysis.

The movie deals heavily with the history of El Duce.  This was done pretty well.  There is enough foreshadowing that the ending doesn't come out of the blue, but its not obvious in the first five minutes either.

The dialogue was ok.  I really would have loved to see more interaction between the two brothers.  That made the first movie, IMO.  This one, there are two token scuffles, as well as an instance of them busting their balls over hair color as well as a "stupid plan" (which was just another nod to the first movie), and that's about it.

I would give it 3 ½ stars, but there was too much man ass.  3 stars out of five.

Not bad, but not great.

For up in the air, I take back what I said about the 10 mil being mathmatically impossible.  I didnt take into account that he was flying American Airlines (even though they showed him walking over a red carpet, which made me assume United Airlines), and their Mile program is a little bit different.  Most programs, "lifetime miles" are butt in seat miles.  American, however, also counts miles you gain in other ways, like their dining network or their credit cards.

Everybody's Fine
Not a bad movie, but it would be a hard one for me to recommend. It starts out with Deniro's character getting ready for his 4 kids to visit (cleaning the house, buying steaks and fine wine "English wines from France ... Italian wines from all over Europe."), only to be stood up by all four.  Since his character is overbearing and meddling, he did what any good parent would do and set out to drop in on each of them unannounced.  From there you learn that something bad happened to one of his kids in Mexico, and the other 3 have been lying to him about various aspects of their life.

That's pretty much it.  I was supposed to watch the blind side instead of this sap fest, but gay flight attendant #3 put the wrong tape in.

Fix
Since I didn't want to watch "Everybody's Fine" AGAIN on the way into DC, I fired up a ripped copy of this movie.  It stars Olivia Wylde (who I learned the other day has a dog named "paco" and was born Olivia Cockburn), her real life husband Tao Ruspoli (was the director as well), and Shawn Andrews (not an unstable, injury prone Guard, rather the actor that played Kevin Pickford in Dazed and Confused).

Basic plot is that Kevin Pickford sentenced to either 6 months of rehab for his heroin addiction or 3 years of jail, and while he took rehab, he got himself arrested only 5 days into it.  So his brother, who is filming this for a documentary, and his brothers girlfriend are to get him back to rehab by 7 pm.

While the plot and the first person point of view style have both been done before, the movie was well done and quite belivable.  My only complaint was the deus ex machina at the very end of the movie.

I would recommend this movie, especially if you are a fan of movies like Requim that center around addicts.  Also, I am now in love with Megalyn Echikunwoke.

finally saw district 9 and i've got mixed reviews on it.

strictly speaking from an entertainment standpoint, i was left wanting.  i thought the acting was very good but it seemed to drag at times and was relatively vague from time to time as well.  it seems like a movie that really should have been about 4 hours in length.  i've heard that they are considering a sequel and/or a prequel which could clear a lot of things up.

however, what i really enjoyed about this movie is the irony in wikus (sp?) getting infected and i also enjoyed the social and political undertones in the movie as well.  it hit on racism, segregation, corporate take over of gov't agencies, etc, etc.  most "alien" movies tend to focus on them wanting to take over our planet and wipe us out and depicts them as violent, blood thirsty beings.  this one definitely stayed away from that and put the focus on humans being the inhumane creatures in the film.  i enjoyed that.

had the movie not delivered several strong messages throughout, i probably would have hated it.  but given the solid acting, social and political relevance, i can say that overall, i enjoyed it very much.  although i gotta admit, i'm not quite sure how it was in the running for best picture.  it was good, but it wasn't that good.

Watched The Wrestler last night. I did not watch stupid WWF nonsense when I was a kid and I still think it's dumber than shtein. Also Mickey Rourke creeps me out a tad.

This movie was awesome. Completely surprised me with how good it was. The pace, the acting, I really enjoyed everything about it. And Marisa Tomei's ass cheeks need some motorboating.

Not to mention how realistic it was.  For example, the wrestler who was dealing steriods in the movie was was actually busted for dealing steriods after the film was made.

Ha. Not surprising.

We got free HBO and Cinemax for a few months and the ladyfriend watched Revolutionary Road yesterday. "Good but so depressing." Uh, pass.

Also I've woken up with the TV on in the middle of the night for the past two nights to see Last Tango in Paris (get the butter) and some porn documentary on hard-core films from the 30s, which was farging weird. Pretty intense stuff actually. Girl on girl, strap ons, analingus... but the women were all gross and out of shape. Fortunately it was hosted by some naked 2010-style-hottie tart.

How has Hot Tub Time Machine not come up yet?

Saw it yesterday, and I liked it. It was a stupid, funny movie that didn't take itself at all seriously. Realistically, one of those two-star movies that I'll definitely watch again. Sort of like Superbad in that way.

probably because it looks like one of the most awful movies ever made.

of course, i thought the same thing based on the previews for "dude, where's my car?" and "super troopers" and i ended up finding both of them to be hilarious.  but it still doesn't change the fact that the previews for both movies were terrible and the same can be said for hot tub time machine.

rjs246

Hot Tub Time Machine looks farging atrocious but the reviews have all pretty much been in line with what Zanshin said. Funny stupid movie that you'll definitely laugh at. Color me surprised.
