He has a $1.5 million roster bonus due 3/5 and would make $5.25 million total for 2010, so there's no way the Eagles keep him. And it's almost as unlikely anyone would want to trade for that salary, unless maybe they are senile and have brains and vital organs riddled with parasitic worms. If a team wanted him, they probably know they would have little or no competition so may as well get him as a FA.

Philadelphia Eagles assistant coach Brian Stewart has left the team to become the defensive coordinator at the University of Houston, the team announced today.

Stewart spent the 2009 season in Philadelphia after spending the previous two seasons as defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys.

well, at least he was able to bring over the cowboys playbook to help prepare the team.

Um, it doesn't matter? isn't it going to be an uncapped year?

What doesn't matter? - Not sure I follow. It's not known if it will be an uncapped year though I think it seems likely.

As far as the Eagles, the $5.25 isn't so much a cap issue, they usually have a good bit of room anyway (and if not they can create it, like when then they hit their limit and re-did some contracts to sign Curtis in '07). It's more that the team won't want to spend that much on a backup qb (assuming McNabb is still here), unless somehow ARs manlove for Vick > Howie and Joe's boners for dollars.

ice grillin you

whether there is a cap or not means squat to the eagles...they are going to pay people what they think they are worth no matter what

yep, which is why an uncapped year will be a good thing for every team in the division except the eagles.

I actually see it as being almost the opposite. dallas will be very restricted in signing FAs because of the final eight rule. Snyder may not spend as much as people think and if he does it will be on glitzy players who will suck, and the giants are typically conservative. The Eagles on the other hand will freely outspend every other team in the NFL for a top FA they covet (i.e. at a prime position like DE, WR, CB, QB, OT - like Kearse, Samuel, Peters, the Moss offer).

ice grillin you

the eagles wont freely outspend everyone in an uncapped year

they sometimes outspend with a cap because they are always under it thus their competition is severly limited

that said the uncapped year is mostly hype because of the rules that will be in place that will cause the market to be bare bones

it helps a team like the skins the most because they can freely cut all their dead weight without any cap ramifications and they will be a huge player for any  guys that do make the open market

I didn't say the Eagles will freely outspend everyone, but they will on a top FA they covet. If they go for one or two top guys, they have a very good chance of out doing the other teams in the division.

Sgt PSN

that i do agree with.  even though they aren't big spenders every year, they have shown that they will spend money on the best guys in the business .....except linebackers.

and i disagree

going hard and quick after a guy you covet against very little if any competition is one thing....going after a guy you covet versus 25 other teams is another story

It's going to be interesting to see their approach. I hope there is a CBA, but its highly unlikely.

It's easy to say that they spend a lot when they have a cap master creating and exploiting loopholes and pushing money around. But when there is no cap, will Lurie write those huge checks?

He talks game about spending, so lets see if he's full of shtein or not.

Alternatively, with there being no salary floor combined with teams in the Final Eight not really being able to go after guys, this windfall of cash that some expect to be had may not be out there.

The Bucs, and teams like them, could end up having like $30M rosters.

Rome

the eagles financial situation is a lot different than the cowboys or taterskins.  their debt load is enormous since lurie is still paying back the loans he took out to buy the team and build the stadium.  it's not like they have an open checkbook to outbid jerrah & danny.

Eagaholic

I think jerruh is in a hell of a lot more in debt than Lurie.

ice grillin you

hes also paying off that debt and stacking chedder at a clip jeffy could only dream of

not to mention hes far wealthier than jeffy ever will be and always has been
