Macho has shown some flashes...but he should be playing STs and in certain packages with Dawk still starting.

Quintin Demps assumed the job was his, and that was the worst thing he could have done. Especially since he wasn't all that great last year.

QuoteAlso, Demps indicated the kick return job won't be his as well. Responsibility appears to have fallen to Ellis Hobbs.

Keep it shut, Demps.

Your mouth lost everything for you.

I honestly don't remember seeing Macho show a flash the whole preseason. Then again, I haven't seen him get burned, either. So if he's another solid but unspectacular defensive player, he'll fit right in.

He showed a few things...one thing that stuck out to me was his STs play, but that probably wn't matter now.

Anyways, Demps seems to have put a sock in it...

QuoteQuintin Demps entered this year's training camp as the starting free safety. He remained in that spot for all four preseason games. However, when the Eagles open the 2009 regular season at the Carolina Panthers this Sunday, it will be Macho Harris who lines up alongside Quintin Mikell at the free safety position.

Demps told reporters following Monday's 10-10-10 practice that it was Harris who took the first-team reps.

"We're all men. We all could tell that I wasn't being consistent enough," Demps said. "There's no sugarcoating it in the NFL. It is what it is.

"We're still competing. It's still a competition. I just have to go in there and compete everyday. Keep it moving."

In fact, Demps will not be the lead kickoff returner either. Instead, Ellis Hobbs will take over that role.

Demps had the benefit of transitioning into the safety role behind two All-Pros in Mikell and Brian Dawkins. By the end of the season, Demps was integrated into the defense in three-safety sets to bolster the run defense. Harris, a fifth-round pick out of Virginia Tech, will not have that luxury. However, Demps is confident in his teammate.

"I don't think it will be too difficult. He's a competitor. He's got guys around him that are going to help him out a lot, be there for him and guide him through," Demps said.

As a rookie in 2008, Demps had nine tackles and a sack. His biggest impact was as a kickoff returner where he averaged 25.3 yards per return and had one touchdown - a 100-yard score against the Ravens. Demps admitted that by entering training camp and the preseason as the starter changed his mindset and opened the door for Harris.

"He just had that hunger. When you first come in, like I came in last year, you come in with nothing to lose. In my second year, I felt like I had a lot to lose," Demps said. "I was playing not to lose instead of to win. He came in with nothing to lose. That's how you have to be."

Even with the late change, Demps has faith that the secondary will flourish like it did last year when the Eagles ranked third in the NFL against the pass.

"We're good, on our way to being great," Demps said.

Hobbs is a great return guy and there shouldn't have been any question about him getting that role, especially seeing as how he's not a starting corner. Only reason to see Demps is for an occasional changeup or if Hobbs gets promoted to starter for some reason.

Sgt PSN

harris is starting because of a little know rule in the nfl rule book that states that no nfl team can ever start 2 players named quintin in the same defensive backfield.

Is DJack going to be returning the punts? I'm sure he'll be getting a lot more action on offense this year, don't want him to get warn down. But no one else really proved they could do it in the preseason.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Greg Lewis was cut by the Pats...I am sure if need be they can bring him in to return punts.

Spelling mistakes on a MB not withstanding, which you won't be winning an award for any time soon, and should probably never ever laugh when someone else makes one.
