shawshank is very good but easily the most overrated movie in history

american history x was an R rated after school special
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

igy gettin it done like warrick

im the board pharmacist....always one step above yous

MDS

yea

shawshank = the sopranos

both great but so over shadowed by other stuff its not even funny

but X was a great movie.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Agree on American History X.  Norton was beyond great in his character.  The story and subsequent end wasnt easlily predictable, as you thought norton's character would get killed, not to mention the foreshadowing of the death.  It was shot as well as you could shoot it from a video standpoint.  Gotta give it credit where its due.

I agree 100%. Good movie but I don't think it was even in the Top 5 for 1994.

I don't think the Sopranos is a good comparison at all though. The show brought a new level of artistry to TV dramas and was a first-of-a-kind program in many ways. If it was overshadowed, it was overshadowed by the shows that followed it and were made possible in part by its success. Shawshank Redemption was a sentimental Hollywood movie similar in style to what preceded and succeeded it, and was overshadowed in terms of the public and awards in its year of release by Forest Gump. It was made and acted very well but what distinguishes the film from other sentimental movies in people's minds is the story. The characters were really not flushed out all that much. That's another huge difference from Sopranos, which was totally character-driven.

MDS

im not talkin what sopranos did in terms of changing the game, that goes without saying, im saying in terms of its pure quality.

it was a good show. probably great. some of the episodes are among the best of all time. but, on the whole, it probably doesnt crack the top 10 greatest shows of all time. maybe not the top 20.

yes the only reason the wire was picked up was because of the success of the sopranos. but the wire is 10000000000000000000000x times better than the sopranos. so is mad men. and probably so was deadwood. and dexter might end up being better too.

A lot of people think Shawshank is overrated, but I think people just get bored of it because it is on USA, AMC, and a million other TV stations all the time. When you see a movie over and over, some of the great moments lose some of their luster.

But hey, if you don't like it as much as others that is your opinion. I love the movie.

I haven't seen Millers Crossing in years though. I'll probably watch it again soon.

MDS

simmons is doing a best of the 00's list.

so far its movies and tv dramas.

obviously the wire is tv drama, but movie is an interesting debate.

i went with castaway because of its rewatchability. i can watch that thing on a loop for 5 days and never get sick of it. its not the best movie of the decade but its held up incredibly well and even works on tnt with commercials.

Cast Away will always hold a special place in my heart, because in a way I envy Tom Hanks character. It's my dream to be stranded alone on my own island. I'm an introvert and don't honestly think I'd get bored.  I'd of course have beer, steak, seafood, satellite, a boat, but other than that he was livin the dream.
