Quote"Look, $4 million is $4 million," Amaro said. "That's not to say it would preclude us from adding on at the right time. We've always had the flexibility to add some things. But it doesn't take an economics major to see that $4 million makes a difference."

Jesus Christ he's a smug little prick.

yeah he has the potential to be a latin american banner

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Amaro is still a douche and I still think he jumped the gun on Ibanez but he's done a hell of a job keeping a WS intact for at least the next 3 seasons. They have a lot of money (Eaton, Jenkins, I think Thome) coming off the books next season too. zesty economy but season ticket sales are up 20%

All Amaro had to do was write a lot of checks.  Big farging deal.

yep...in baseball its all about who you acquire whether it be trades drafts or FA...anyone can resign players (especially restricted players) if the owners give the go ahead

Big difference is he got these guys locked up for 3 years so what's turned into the yearly Hamels/Howard salary drama is done. You may not think it's a distraction but Hamels said last offseason when they lowballed him he'd remember it in the future and the Howard situation was a mess.

oh i think its great...i just dont think it is a reflection of how good a gm he is...and im not saying hes a terrible gm because its way to early to make a determination on that...i do sense that hes a terrible person tho who would be unteneable if the team won a title under him...lets hope that happens

Howard+Utley+Rollins in 2011 = $43.5M.  I think most of the late 80s Phils teams had that as an entire payroll...

According to baseballchronology.com, the entire Phils' payroll in 1989 was $8.6 million, whch was the lowest in the league.

Looking further, the payroll of the 1993 pennant winners was $28.7M (#18 in the league), and didn't reach $43.5M until  2002, when they jumped from $41.6M to $58.0M.

To put it in perspective, the Phils had a lower payroll than Tampa Bay for three of the first four years of the Ray's existence.

Part 1 of a Rollins interview was just on CSN:

-- wants to be known as a repeat champion and thinks the Phils haven't gotten enough respect from the league for rolling through the playoffs
-- predicting 98-101 regular season wins, somebody from the Phils will win MVP, Cole will win the Cy Young Award, Lidge will continue his streak, and the Phils will repeat as champs

He's 2 for 2, too bad he didn't predict testicular cancer for Jose Reyes.
