Regarding the comment someone made earlier today about the Repubelican party drifting further rightward....

QuoteMr. Buckley said he did not understand the sense of betrayal that some of his conservative colleagues felt, but said that the fury and ugly comments his endorsement generated is "part of the calcification of modern discourse. It's so angry." Quoting Ronald Reagan, he added, "I haven't left the Republican Party. It left me."

Regarding, again, the argument that Obama's tax plan equates to "far-reaching wealth re-distribution", several questions should be asked...

Was it far-reaching wealth-redistribution when the Bush administration evaporated the tax distribution under Clinton's watch?

Under Clinton's eight years of tax rates did the gap between the rich and poor continue to expand (Yes)?

During the past eight years has this gap expanded even more quickly (Yes)?

Does evaporating or elimating the Estate tax (oh, sorry, I meant the "Death Tax") benefit people like Paris Hilton? People who obviously work harder than any of us because after all they have all that money.

What the past couple decades have again clearly demonstrated is that (drum roll please) - Money makes money. The notion that the top 5% in the country work harder for the money is ridiculous. When someone has that much money - Millions and millions of dollars - They don't have to do lift a finger. Sure, some entrepeneurs do still work their tails off and some do great things. These are the ones we tend to hear about. Most though, can simply live off of their frkn dividends for eternity. In fact many can even outpace working class people solely from these sorts of yields, not doing a godamn thing. That's because, again, money makes money.

You want smaller government, start by a deep cut to military spending.  It's wildly out of control.  Eliminate half the foreign bases, we don't need them.

People who make greater than 250 can afford what Obama is asking, and as patriots they should be happy to pay it.

This part goes without saying in terms of smaller budget. But it doesn't really represent a smaller government in any way. Besides, the military itself doesn't need to be reduced. The activities it takes part in internationally needs to be reduced. Drastically. Cutting by half might not even be enough.

Sacrificing for the good of the country is basically reserved for our military personnel as far as most people are concerned these days. Taxes are seen as a burden or welfare to most of the wealthy.

Small government works for Bermuda.  For a country that has 300,000,000 people, it doesn't work.

maybe we should just have 50 small governments with a collective government that keeps things in order...

You're damn right.  Libertarians don't want * zero * government.  We want government that does exactly what it says it should do in the Constitution.

We're funny like that.
