They do get 4 playoff roster exemptions according to Gillick because of the injuries to guys like Mathieson, Gordon and Zagurski. But Tad is not eligible because he joined after Sept 1.

Props for Pat
Phillies president David Montgomery hired Pat Gillick as general manager after the 2005 season because the club couldn't get to the postseason. Gillick has rewarded him with back-to-back NL East championships for the first time since 1976-78.

Gillick said he will retire after this season.

"When I think back about Pat's contribution, it's that he let the good people here continue to do good things," Montgomery said. "He didn't come in and say I have to make all these changes. He worked with Mike [Arbuckle]. He worked with Ruben [Amaro Jr.]. He said we just needed a couple of more wins. Well, the glass ceiling for us was winning 90. We finally won 90 this year. Sometimes good leadership just gives you the ability to believe in yourself."

Asked whether the team's success makes him more likely to find Gillick's replacement internally - assistant GMs Amaro and Arbuckle are candidates - Montgomery said it's too early to talk about that.

"We're blessed with two great internal candidates," he said. "I continue to ask Pat, 'Isn't this a lot of fun?' But my expectation is after we hopefully win a few more games, we'll talk about that."

The Bucks County Courier Times reported this morning that Golson was told he will not be on the post-season roster and is scheduled to fly to Florida on Monday to play in the Florida Instructional League.

I believe they won 97 in 1993.

EDIT:  They only won 90 in 1983 and in 1978.  The most ever were in 1976 and 1977 (101 each).

Coincidentally, they won 92 games in a season last in... 1964.

They went 91-63 in 1950, 90-62 in 1915.
