6. I think I learn something every time I read Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News. The other day, he was writing about how dumb the "tackles'' stat is -- something all of us who cover the league think is true but only Goose had the brains to write about -- and made this point: "The Indy defense was on the field for 980 snaps last season. But there were no tackles [made] on 199 of those plays because they were either incomplete passes, interceptions or offensive touchdowns. That left 781 defensive snaps that involved a tackle -- and the Colts' coaching staff awarded a league-high 1,416 tackles. That's an average of 1.81 tackles per play. The Indianapolis staff awarded 891 "solo" tackles in those 781 plays. Figure that one out.'' Superb point.

Evidence as to why tackle stats are a sham. They are all different depending on whose stats you look at. The teams are always higher compared to the sites like ESPN and CBS. I believe they are an unofficial stat for the league too.

JOHNSON WANTS TO BE OCHO CINCO, LEGALLY

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson was fined $5,000 for wearing "Ocho Cinco" on the back of his jersey before a game in 2006.

To avoid getting fined, Johnson hasn't done it since then. But Johnson now has a plan for how he can get away with having "Ocho Cinco" spelled out over the "85″ on his back.

We've learned that Johnson has taken the first steps in the state of Florida toward legally changing his last name to Ocho Cinco.

Seriously.

If Johnson follows through on this, his actual, legal name will be Chad Ocho Cinco, and the NFL would then (we assume) allow him to put his new last name on the back of his jersey.

From a business standpoint, this might be Chad's way of picking up some of the extra cash that he wants to make but that the team has said it won't give him. The jersey would instantly become one of the NFL's top sellers, and NFL players get a cut of all sales of their jerseys.

In recent interviews, including one on ESPN Monday night, Johnson has made veiled references about future plans that he has said will change the way fans think about him. This is a strange one, to say the least.

METAIRIE, La. (AP) - Defensive tackle Hollis Thomas, a starter for the New Orleans Saints for much of the past two seasons, has a right triceps injury that will sideline him about two months.

With Thomas out, Sedrick Ellis, the Saints' first-round draft pick from Southern Cal, is expected to see more playing time.
