There are plenty of people with leftist political views of which I think very highly.
There are plenty of people with right-wing political views which I dislike greatly.

Contrary to what you might think, someone's political preferences and opinions do not define them.  I have unabashedly declared Obama to be classy, intelligent, and articulate.  He is a brilliant candidate and should win the Presidency without my vote (although probably not North Carolina).  Still, I can't vote for someone that wants to do so many things I don't want the government to do.  That doesn't make sense.

However, I would invite him over to a barbecue or ask him to write me a recommendation letter long before I'd do either for McCain.

Comprende, senor?

So then maybe you could just vote for him?

You don't have to tell any of your friends you did it...

As a bonus, he's not a buffoon on social issues and doesn't hide behind the Bible to justify his decisions.

Teddy Kennedy has a brain tumor and will likely die soon.  I think you should run for the Senate seat in Mass when he dies.

My "Constitutionalist, infrastructure-focussed, anti-drug-law, pro-choice, anti-zombie, pro-gun-rights, pro-anal, anti-celebrity, pro-war (but only in cases of extreme undeadness)" platform could start a goddamned revolution!

By the way, Bob Barr got the Libertarian party nomination. This is only remarkable because I know him (semi) personally. His nephew is one of my closest friends. I've seen the man smoking a cigar in his boxers and he's seen me throwing-up-on-myself-drunk. Since I'm in Massachusetts and the Democratic nominee is guaranteed to win the state I might just vote/campaign for him. GO DUDE I KNOW!

QuoteThis is a pattern I've noticed with a lot of my conservative friends/family members/acquaintances. It's almost as though they all realize that Bush is a nightmare, and McCain won't be the answer, but it's so ingrained in them to vote republican that they are trying to talk themselves into it and getting louder and louder to drown out any opposing thoughts as they try harder and harder to convince themselves.

Well put. I've had the same observation, which includes my time arguing with the facist rednecks on ES. There is a large contingent of folks who A) Claimed to vote for Bush in 2004 only because Kerry was supposedly worse and folks who B) Claimed they would vote vote Democratic if only Obama could defeat that whore Hillary. These sentiments have begun to disappear.

So, for some it's time to put up or shut up.

This is the most baffling thing to me. I heard this repeatedly early on, and now that the reality of his victory is at hand, they all seem to be crawling back into their cozy conservative hole. I honestly think that it's fear of something unknown but don't know what is actually causing it.

I think it's largely a simplistic matter of rooting for the team that you're used to.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

The best I can do is vote for Bob Barr, suckers.

I mean... the guy smokes cigars in his boxers!
