Martin Erat's new seven-year, $31.5 contract with the Nashville Predators has been rejected by the NHL.

Erat's contract was rejected because it did not conform to the Collective Barganing Agreement.

Erat, 26, scored a career high 26 goals this past season and tied a personal best with 57 points. The Predators selected Erat
with the 191st overall pick in the 1999 Entry Draft.

The 6-foot-0, 195-pound left winger is currently representing the Czech Republic at the IIHF World Championships in Halifax and Quebec City.

This contract was going to mess up negotiations with Umberger and Carter because it was set so high, no word why it was rejected though

The Predators originally announced Erat's seven-year, $31.5 million deal on Monday, but the league rejected it because it didn't conform to what is commonly called "the 100 percent rule" according to Erat's agent, Mike Deutsch.

Deutsch explained it like this: When the lower sum of the player's first two contract years is divided by two, the resulting total (in Erat's case it was $1.75 million) cannot be less than the difference in any two years in the contract.

The difference between years 5 and 6 of Erat's contract had been $2 million.

To fix the problem, the two sides took $250,000 out of Erat's year 7 salary and moved it to year 6.

"That solved the problem," Deutsch said. "It took all of two minutes to fix and Martin has signed the new contract."

A Predators spokesperson said the problem "... had already been taken care of."

The bottom line, assuming the NHL approves the new deal, is that Erat will still have a seven-year, $31.5 million deal.
