QuoteEagles - BIRDS HAVE THEIR NUMBERS

By LES BOWEN
Philadelphia Daily News

Rating 10 free agents who might interest the Eagles, and how good a fit each might be, on a scale of one to 10 midnight green replica jerseys:

CB ASANTE SAMUEL

Maybe the the biggest name in free agency, if the Patriots end up re-signing Randy Moss. Reports of the Eagles' interest have been widespread and persistent. And they actually make sense, given that the team has a need at corner. EIGHT JERSEYS.

DE ANTWAN ODOM

One thing that absolutely, definitely will happen, either through free agency or the draft - the Birds will take a lesson from the Giants and acquire at least one more pass-rush weapon. All the Pro Bowl-level names are off the board, but Odom had eight sacks last season for the Titans and he would seem to have lots of tread left on his tires. Plays in a similar defense to the one the Eagles play. SEVEN JERSEYS.

WR BERNARD BERRIAN

Agent Drew Rosenhaus probably isn't going to shop both Berrian and Dontè Stallworth to the Eagles, it'll be one or the other. Berrian has good size, caught 71 passes last season from less-than-great Chicago QBs, and has done some kick and punt returning. Might have more upside than Stallworth. SIX JERSEYS.

S GIBRIL WILSON

Excellent player, but it's hard to see how he fits with the Eagles unless they're going to shuffle Brian Dawkins to the bench. There's no need to replace Quintin Mikell at strong safety. If you add Wilson, either Sean Considine or courageous comeback story J.R. Reed has to go. The Eagles need immediate help at corner, not safety. But maybe signing a good player is never a bad idea? FIVE JERSEYS.

WR DONTE STALLWORTH

Three months ago, fans would have been delirious over the idea of bringing Stallworth back, but his profile in the Pats' offense really shrunk down the stretch. We know he has ability and fits the Birds' scheme, but he sure has been an underachiever, for one reason or another, his entire career. FIVE JERSEYS.

DE TRAVIS LaBOY

The other defensive end the Titans are letting walk. Wouldn't be a big signing, more of a guy to stick in the rotation. But he had six sacks as a sub last season, and his brother-agent says the Birds are interested. FOUR JERSEYS.

DE JUSTIN SMITH

Closest thing to a "name" defensive end on the market. Has never lived up to having been drafted fourth overall by the Bengals in 2001; only two sacks last season, but he has started in 107 successive games. Not much buzz about Eagles interest. FOUR JERSEYS.

WR ANDRE' DAVIS

Not a star but a 6-1 wideout with speed who ran two kickoffs back for touchdowns in the same game last season. FOUR JERSEYS.

WR D.J. HACKETT

Big, strong receiver with good hands. No need for him if you think the puzzling conversion of Hank Baskett to extra blocking tight end last season was a temporary thing. Hackett missed 10 Seattle games with ankle problems last season. THREE JERSEYS.

CB DRAYTON FLORENCE Would be a nickel-type depth signing. Didn't have a great year in San Diego, but there aren't a lot of attractive corners out there. TWO JERSEYS.

Let's just say the secondary overall is not bursting with depth right now.

HOW he's stayed on the Eagles beat is beyond me.

Enough with this CB is the biggest glaring need garbage already.

They currently have two adequate starters and one adequate nickel back, true.  But none of us know just how close they are to cutting ties with Lito, or if they aren't, how much he'll stay healthy.

Still, I think they are in a good position to DRAFT a guy that has some talent and cover skills instead of making a corner the highest-paid defensive player ever.

* If * the Eagles sign Samuel, are you people seriously saying you'll be upset over it?

Please say no.  PLEASE?

if they sign samuel and thats their significant move in the offseason ill be furious

if they sign samuel and trade lito for fitzgerald then sign odom and andre davis ill be thrilled

You're right.  Adding a Pro Bowl player would be sufficient grounds for expressing fury on your part.

Oh, and the second scenario you offered... totally plausible.

Neither Considine or Reed should be a given a 2nd thought if Wilson is attainable.  Especially Reed.  It's great that he's been able to come back and everything and I don't object to the Eagles keeping him around.  But at the same time, if you can drastically upgrade his position and he happens to be the odd man out, then so be it.  As much as I like the guy, he's only 1 minor knee injury away from ending his career.

PhillyGirl

If they throw that kind of money at him (that's being discussed) and don't address the more urgent needs that are out there, yes, I'll be FURIOUS.

They are going to address them.  I'm not sure they'll address them to our liking if that's even possible.  What I am sure of, though, is that if they add Samuel (the best free agent in this class) then I'll start by being happy about that move and then see what happens afterwards.

If they add Samuel then they almost have to deal Lito, right?  If they deal Lito, then it's almost a certainty that they'll add one of the pieces everyone agrees they need, so again, it would be a good thing if it happened, right?

Spot on.  If one of those two is the cost for Wilson, it has to be done.
