His movies suck ass.
He might as well work for the hallmark channel.
I find him pompous and overrated, and I cannot think of one movie of his that I liked in the last 10 years.

you just dont like him which is fair as we all have our own peculiar hatreds of one thing or another...but its pretty much impossible to make a case that he isnt one of the best actors of his generation...and again hes not even one of my favorites

saving private ryan
road to perdition
philadelphia
green mile
gump

are all good to great movies...hell even youve got mail was good for a chick flick...and hanks was excellent in it...im sure im forgetting a few as well

saving private ryan - an excercise in special effects with very little movie behind it. Hanks is the definition of replacable in this.
road to perdition - Overly stylized, but the movie was semi-enjoyable. Again, Hanks adds nothing to this besdies a name. I thought his acting was poor.
Philadelphia - excellent movie, point well taken
green mile - looked super gay, didn't see
gump - one of my least liked movies. What is good about this flick? It's sentimental crap. People like it b/c it highlights the easily remebered peices of American history and it doesn't make them have to think about anything. Hanks contribution is bad elecoution. This recieving 9 or whatever Oscar nominations is what made me realize that the Oscars, like the Grammys have a linear relationship with a movies sales. Crowe winning best actor for his grunting in Gladitor only confirmed it.

i'm not bashing Hanks, not by a long shot, i generally like him, i thought he was real good in Private Ryan, but he does all those corny chick flicks and that lowers him in my book.

either way, to call him one of best of an era that contains Pacino, DeNiro, etc...is just silly

pacino and deniro...hmmm...two actors who pretty much have played the same character IN EVERY MOVIE they were ever in. not saying they suck cause they are in some of my fav movies and are great actors. tom hanks, since becoming a well known and respected actor, has had more of a range of roles and has done fantastic in all of them. he can play any character. to me, thats talent. you might think denzel is the man, yea, but what other characters has he played other than the tragic hero and done well in? they all play tough guys, cops or gangsters, big deal.

The problem with good actors who get really famous is two-fold:

1. People start basically writing roles for them, and the just wind up playing the same person over and over, until they sort of turn into a caricture of themselves. Pacino and Nicholson are the most obvious examples of this.

2. They get to pick whatever role they want, so they usually pick the roles that make them look the best/focus the most on thier character. Denzel sort of reversed his trend in this direction with Man on Fire and Training Day, but now he is back to making ego-fluffing garbage like the great debators. Michael Douglas has really managed to avoid this by taking on interesting roles. Tom Cruised is a good example of this. He has ever taken an interesting role, ever? Tom Hanks is also a good example of this, becuase I want to punch him the face.

name a few what?

maybe if you knew a few movies outside of The Godfather and Goodfellas you would understand why that's a ridiculous statement

I went to see it on a double date with my girlfriend, her friend and some fag the other girl was dating.  The dude was actually crying at the end of the movie.  Seriously.

I spent an hour at the bar we went to afterwards laughing at him and mocking him.

I can totally see IGY crying like that, though.  His sensitivity is breathtaking.
