QuotePa. Gov. Ed Rendell: Some White Voters 'Not Ready' to Elect Black Candidate
by Associated Press
Tuesday, February 12, 2008

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Gov. Ed Rendell, one of Hillary Rodham Clinton's most visible supporters, said some white Pennsylvanians are likely to vote against her rival Barack Obama because he is black.

"You've got conservative whites here, and I think there are some whites who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate," Rendell told the editorial board of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in remarks that appeared in Tuesday's paper.

To buttress his point, Rendell cited his 2006 re-election campaign, in which he defeated Republican challenger Lynn Swann, the former Pittsburgh Steelers star, by a margin of more than 60 percent to less than 40 percent.

"I believe, looking at the returns in my election, that had Lynn Swann been the identical candidate that he was — well-spoken, charismatic, good-looking — but white instead of black, instead of winning by 22 points, I would have won by 17 or so," he said. "And that (attitude) exists. But on the other hand, that is counterbalanced by Obama's ability to bring new voters into the electoral pool."

Rendell, chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 2000 and previously Philadelphia's mayor, endorsed Clinton on Jan. 23.

Pennsylvania holds its primary April 22.

Several figures in Clinton's campaign, including her husband, the former president, have been criticized in recent weeks for raising Obama's race. In response, Bill Clinton has said he will stick to promoting his wife, rather than defending her.

Hillary tonight in Texas:  I'm tested, I'm ready... let's make it happen!

Uh, no.

Go away, bitch.  NOW.

I"m just gonna go ahead and be against everyone where when I say I'd rather have Hilary (and, in effect, Bill) in the white house then Obama.

But I'd rather have McCain then either of them.

But, farg it. Lets all hate Hilary because it's the cool thing to do!

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

i'm definitely not a hillary hater.  the differences between her and obama are relatively small, and i'm really not sure how some people can love one but detest the other.  i voted for obama, and i hope he wins, but if it ends up being hillary she's still far and away a better choice than any republicans.

i dont think hes racist and it is the truth but hes definitely playing race politcs by even bringing it up...the only reason he would make such an obvious and uneccessay statement is to put the fact that barry is black back into the forefront of peoples minds...because he has done an amazing job of color blinding people...and once that happens he starts taking away white votes from hillary which is exactly whats happening...

i love ed but it was a bush league comment and frankly he should be better than that....but this is just the start of it...barry has had it easy thus far and as this race winds down its going to get worse with the race politics....we just have to hope the country has gotten passed a lot of that ignorance...and good god wait till the general when the right wing loonies try swiftboating him

couldnt agree more...altho obama is definitely more liberal the major difference btwn the two is not policy as much as it is inspiration and the ability to get so many people involved...the amount of young people and blacks voting this year is incredible...not to mention the republicans that barry has attracted...he brings people together hillary doesnt....people actually care about politics this year and thats a great thing...not to mention what it would mean for the country to have a black president

the stark contrast was never more present than the difference btwn obamas speech last night in madison and mccains in virginia...i actually felt sorry for mccain he looked so old and decrepit and he had like 200 people there half a sleep...obama sounded like friggin martin luther king and had 20k people going nuts...keith olbermann had a great line on msnbc after obama then mccain spoke last night..."if nothing else was learned tonight it is that you should NOT speak AFTER barrack obama"

I don't hate Hillary Clinton as much as I hate what she represents.  It's just more of the same whereas Obama represents a completely fresh start and a change in direction for this country.  Clinton is the ultimate Washington insider and this country has had enough of her and her husband.

If it came down to a choice between Hillary and another four years of a Republican in the White House, then sure, I'd vote for her.   I just hope it doesn't come to that.

Sunday I was having a political debate with a relative who is super religous and wants Huckabee but will vote for McCain cause she realizes Huckabee has no shot. Anyways, every time I asked about the war and McCains stance she stands by the view that Osama Bin Laden and Sadam Hussein were both responsible for 911(90% of people I talked to while I was on Active Duty thought the same thing). They're preaching that in her church. You know, all those brown people are evil and conspiring to blow up the United States. She brought up that she's anti-abortion - which is fine - but I countered with whats the freakin difference they're never gonna make it illegal. Racism is veiled on many levels and this is the problem I see with people voting for Obama. A lot of them will say out loud they don't care if a candidate is black or white but underneath it all is where the little voice in their head is saying vote for whitey. I doubt any Republican candidate who is black or brown for that matter would ever get elected in the first place. Riots might ensue.

Yes, they are relatively small. HOWEVER, I vehemently disagree with universal health care....and Hillary doesn't inspire me to get up off the couch, let alone do anything else. She, as I have said before, seems like she's talking AT Me,  not to me. I cringe when I listen to her speeches. I can't stand her "experience" angle either and how she shoves it down everyone's throat when its half truth.

Obama inspires the people he speaks to. He is why I was SO very excited to vote this year. I woke up on Primary day and felt a rush of excitement just to go vote for him. After my vote meant nothing when I voted for Gore in 2000, I never thought I'd feel that way again.

Damn, ignorant much? Yeah, we hate Hillary because its "cool". Nevermind that we all have actual MINDS and believe in something or don't believe in something enough to make a choice.  >:(
