Why? What does that accomplish and why should we have closed borders to begin with? In a world that is rapidly becoming international, why is this country suddenly trying to seclude itself form its neighbors?

The reason it's a big deal now is "financial".  At the same time the boomers are breaking Social Security CA and other border states are taking the big on free healthcare and education.  Then once a baby is born here basically the rest of the family (overtime) gets to legally immagrate here and if the old folks are over 62 BINGO..they collect.  It's very bad socially policy to legally reward criminals (even if they are good people).

But what are the financial repercussions of dropping the hammer on illiegal immgration? An entire section of our economy gets wiped out. The money invested into 'shoring up' our borders comes out of our pockets, not to mention the money spent to prosecute/deport/imprison all of these 'criminals'. Kicking out millions upon millions of people who live here and spend money here and work for peanuts doing jobs that no one else wants to do will not do good things to our economy. Mark my words.

all the you reasons you just listed as to why its supposedly a big problem now have existed forever...and to stop it you have to literally close the borders... really none of this is new or more important now than it was 20 years ago...its just that politics and specifically the right wing of the republican party are much more mean now...slash and burn politics...politics of personal destruction...fear mongering ect ect ect...thats the major difference and why its a bigger issue now

There has been illegal immigration going on forever.  But for most of that time (1st 200 years)  legal/illegal immigrants had to provide there own housing, healthcare and learn English (at least out version!).  The Mexican government actually passes out free maps and pamphlets showing how to sneak in so they (Mexican Gov.) don't have to pay for there own citizens and so that those that get jobs can send money back.

It is hard to separate the BS especially during an election cycle.  We do not have lots of money.  Soc Sec is a pile of IOU's.  If you wonder what independent viewers think of our "situation" just look at the Americian dollar.  It's value has been going down for 6-7 years worldwide (not just Japan).  All these other countries aren't out to get us...they just know we are spending money we don't have..only promise to get...someday .
