Now to lose the next 4 and make this a waste of time....

dude, you are starting to sound a lot like me.  buddy of mine told me tonight "hey, Phillies are looking good" and I gave him the same response.  than again he is a huge red sox fan and his sphincter is so tight right now he's turning blue.

here's what I cant understand, and maybe somebody else has a better explanation. Why do you take Romero out after he pitched a solid 7th inning, and put Gordon in to face 2 lefties--one that has been batting .667 with multiple homers against him?

Is there a reason you have to go a pitcher an inning from the 7th? Cant these pitchers throw 2 solid innings in a row (aside from Meyers) and keep the momentum going if they have it?

Rome

I've watched the play several times now and two things come to mind.  First, I'm not sure Anderson was wrong.  He was within proximity of the bag when he stated his slide so he does have a point (although no one can say he didn't intentionally try to drill and interfere with Iguchi).

Second, he's a farging idiot for not interpreting the play as it was happening.  Iguchi had zero chance of making the throw so even if Anderson had peeled off into shallow right field it wouldn't have made a difference in the world.  Green was going to be safe, Chavez was already having Gatorade in the dugout by the time Iguchi made his pivot so it's automatically a tie game with Green safe at first.

Marlon was never the sharpest tool in the shed as a Phillie and his horrendous base running blunder cost the Mets the game.  It's nice to see an opposing team get reamed for doing something stupid for a change.

Naturally, it requires an ex-Phillie to make a gaffe this severe.

Too many managers, including Charlie, are by the book when it comes to the BP and how to use it.

With that being said, Charlie is the manager of the year. What he is doing with this collection of scrubs is pretty good.

Rome

What Bob Melvin is doing with the Diamondbacks is more impressive.

And Lou Piniella has to be given serious consideration as well.  The Cubs were 30 games under .500 last year and now they sit atop the Central 3 games over .500.

Sure, they spent a ton of dough, but still, they've made a pretty remarkable turnaround despite not having Prior & Kerry Wood all season.

PhillyPhreak54

I wouldn't mention Wood or Prior since both were known to be damaged even before this season.

Piniella or Melvin haven't had the injuries to deal with like ol' Chuck either.

Get Silva?

QuoteWith the Twins losing again, the Phillies might be able to acquire righthander Carlos Silva from the Twins, baseball sources said last night. Silva, 28, is a groundball pitcher with a 10-13 record and a 4.33 ERA who will be a free agent after this season. The Phillies developed him as a reliever, then traded him in after the 2003 season. They have been talking with the Twins about Silva for a couple of weeks

Actually this time had nothing to do with being by the book. Romero had pitched 3 games straight, and 4 out of 5 days.

With Romero being on of your more reliable pen guys, and a day game the next day, you had to take him out, if you over pitch him, your farged even more.

Gordon sucks, yes...but he pitched against the same batters (Wright and Beltran) monday night and shut them down.

Also the book says Gordon is the 8th inning man, and he comes regardless of the fact that he'd face the middle of the lineup/sucks.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Rome

LOL at Silva.  Only in the Phillies universe could acquiring a sub .500 pitcher with an ERA over 4.00 be considered a coup and an upgrade.

Losers.

Thats my point. Why cant these pitchers go more than an inning regardless of how many days you pitch in a row? They surely dont practice for 1 inning only. I know you have the rest of the pen to rely on--again for only an inning--but you would think that if these guys are striking batters out and having a solid stance on the mound, they could go one more?

I see your point with Gordon facing the batters the previous night and it could happen again that he downs them, but why take a chance when your pitcher out there is hot?

SunMo

seriously...give Charlie manager of the year, see what i do...

it's not like i have something planned, i have no idea...but something will happen
I'm the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood.

It will make you hungry or horny, but either way your kids are in a lot of trouble?

Read what I posted again, it's the same answer.

And also because there is still over a month left to play. If Romero had come out in the 8th, and blew out his arm, you'd be posting about how Manuel should have taken him out.

I'm hoping he gets Manager of the Year.
